VAT Accountant
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly motivated VAT Accountant to join the Treasury, Tax and Insurance (TTI) team within the Finance Directorate. The TTI team is a small team normally based at our Stepps office near Glasgow.
Main Purpose of the Role
The VAT Accountant will be responsible for maintaining VAT compliance across the Scottish Water Group. They will maintain and manage strong collaborative relationships with our internal and external stakeholders, ensuring VAT compliance and mitigating VAT risks. The VAT Accountant will act as the Subject Matter Expert across the Group providing VAT support as required.
The VAT Accountant will report to the Tax & Treasury Accountant.

The VAT Accountant will report to the Tax & Treasury Accountant.
Key Accountabilities/Tasks
- Ensuring VAT compliance across the Scottish Water group. This will include carrying out compliance audits and delivering training to other teams where required.
- Develop and maintain appropriate procedures and guidance notes to support VAT compliance.
- Continual improvement of key VAT processes in collaboration with the wider business to ensure they are aligned to best practice and are fit for purpose
- Liaise with HMRC during routine audits and ad hoc enquiries
- Provide adhoc advice as required to other areas of the business in respect of VAT
- Identify any VAT risks and implement remedial actions
- Support new system development and other initiatives/transactions with a VAT impact
- Keep up to date, review and embed key relevant developments in VAT legislation.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of monthly VAT return utilising Making Tax Digital.
- Inputting into the Group's Tax Strategy
- Liaise with other VAT Accountants as part of Water UK Indirect Tax Group
Essential Capabilities, Skills & Experience Required
- Strong VAT knowledge with demonstrable practical experience ideally in a large corporate.
- Relevant tax or accounting professional qualification or accreditation (e.g. ATT or ACCA) or suitably qualified by experience
- Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to provide advice and information on complex issues to non-technical individuals
- This role will require confidence in dealing with stakeholders both internally and externally.
- Excellent IT skills including excel and accounting software
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to plan and prioritise workload to ensure all deadlines and expectations are met,
Desirable
- An understanding of AlphaVAT software or other Making Tax Digital Software
Salary Scale: £34,609 to £47,149.
