The post holder will provide support to the Head of Financial Management in the delivery of financial and statutory obligations of the Trusts Financial Management function. Specific responsibility for providing comprehensive financial management information and support to a group of clinical and departmental budgets. To be a key member of the Trusts Finance Department and contribute to the delivery of its overall objectives.

They will be a member of the divisional team, demonstrating expert accounting and business knowledge, analytical support and presenting highly complex financial and business information to clinical and non clinical colleagues. They will participate in all aspects of service area financial and business performance and financial management processes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

Secondment posts will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to work with a high degree of autonomy, working closely with the Programme Manager and other stakeholders to plan the finances of the services. The successful candidate will also support financial monitoring and reporting of the Trusts response to Covid-19 including the vaccination programme.

The postholder will need to be credible, articulate and comfortable working with all levels up to and including members of the executive team at the Trust. He or she will need to provide expert support and advice within the Division, but also provide challenge when appropriate. The postholder will also need to work closely with colleagues in other corporate areas such as HR, IT, Performance, Quality and Governance and to provide cross-cutting analysis, interpreting both financial and non-financial information effectively.

The successful candidate will need significant management accounts experience, preferably but not essentially gained in an NHS environment. He or she will need to be a highly effective communicator, with the ability to explain things clearly to non-financial managers. It is also vital that he or she is hands on, with excellent technical skills.

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will support individual directorates in all aspects of decision making.
  • The post holder is expected to act independently whilst taking decisions and only seeks help on matters of clarification.
  • Taking the lead in all financial issues and reporting to the Head of Financial Management. Works to agreed, usually demanding, deadlines and works autonomously in achieving this. Represents the Finance Business Partners and on occasion the Head of Financial Management
  • Works within a multidisciplinary team, is an integral part of the senior management team within finance.
  • Discusses complex financial queries with staff and budget holders. Discusses financial issues with budget holders, which may be contentious for example Cash Releasing Efficiency Saving, month end overspends.
  • Provides advice and interpretation on complex financial issues to non-finance managers. The post-holder will be expected to develop relationships across the directorates.
  • Responsible for completion of returns to various external bodies that relate to their specific area, this must be done accurately and timely.
  • The post-holder will be required to give high level advice to their colleagues in financial services on issues such as disputes over payments within Directorates. The issues are often sensitive and may require specific advice as often the disputes are with out-side agencies.
  • Responsible for managing support staff within the Divisional Structure and across divisions, and coordinating information to enable effective management of the corporate structure workload.
  • It is expected that the post-holder will have achieved a recognised CCAB professional accountancy qualification, and relevant post qualification experience, or will have developed comparable levels of experience.
  • The post-holder is required to support the business planning, annual accounts, reference costs, and monthly reporting timetable. The timetables for Directorate Accounts is often pressurised in that more that one return will be required within the same time-frame.
