The VP of Liquidity Liquidity Risk Management will play a key role in Northern Trust’s global oversight of liquidity risk, by working closely with the Head of Liquidity Risk Management in the development and implementation of best practices. She or he will serve as a risk advisor to the Treasury team and collaborate with partners across departments, divisions and geographic regions, including North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The Specialist will have responsibilities in a variety of areas, such as contingency funding plans, liquidity stress testing, data and reporting, risk assessment, and governance policies and guidelines.

The position is in the second line of defense. As there continues to be heightened regulatory expectations and industry practices surrounding independent risk functions to provide oversight for liquidity activities, the Specialist will have an opportunity to enhance current practices and be an important contributor to corporate risk management.

Major Duties

As a VP, Liquidity Risk Management, the ability to work autonomously on complex risk analysis is expected. Specialists are accountable for managing multiple deliverables, as well as overseeing the work of more junior team members. Responsibilities include:

  1. Independently reviewing and challenging liquidity regulatory reporting (e.g. NSFR, LCR, 2052a, and public disclosures), in effort to verify compliance as well as integrity of reporting
  2. Leading enterprise risk assessment and reporting efforts for liquidity
  3. Presenting the risk exposure and results of independent reviews to the Market and Liquidity Risk Committee
  4. Partnering across functions to support complex interpretations, trend analysis, and strategic decision making
  5. Independently reviewing and challenging the severity of stress testing assumptions, performing independent analysis of key product drivers to support assumption calibration
  6. Evaluating the adequacy of liquid asset buffer practices including composition, valuation and collateral management processes
  7. Raising material risk issues to the Market and Liquidity Risk Committee, and coordinating with 1st line partners on remediation
  8. Assessing compliance with regulatory requirements and common industry practices applicable to liquidity management
  9. Recommending and advising on areas of enhancements, and informing risk oversight committees of mitigation steps underway

Experience Required:

  • 7 or more years of experience in one or more of the following areas of financial services is desired: treasury, risk management, compliance or regulatory oversight, auditing, consulting, or financial reporting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated success challenging and influencing outcomes
  • Understanding of liquidity regulations and applying these expectations to practice (e.g. Enhanced Prudential Standards, LCR, NSFR, 2052a, SR 16-3)
  • Experience with Axiom, advanced analytics skills, knowledge of data quality and reporting controls, and some quantitative skills are a plus
  • Strong knowledge of financial services is expected, including understanding of the balance sheet and the custody business and their implications to potential liquidity exposures is a plus
  • Familiarity with treasury instruments, funding and investment activities, and cash and settlement practices are a plus Experience with analytics within Oracle, Excel, SAS, or other tools is a plus
