The trust is seeking two trustees/non-executive directors with high-level skills in the fields of finance or data/digital with generic business, entrepreneurial competencies. One trustee will be based in the North West and one will be based in the South or South East of England. When safe to do so board meetings are held either at 8 City Road, London EC1Y 2AA and rotate across the schools.

The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The opportunity

Sir Rod Aldridge launched his educational charity, the Aldridge Foundation, in 2006 after retiring from Capita Plc, the business he set up, and which became one of this country's most successful companies. Ten years later, the Aldridge Education Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) was established to fulfil the Aldridge Foundation's ambition of providing the best education to young people from disadvantaged background regardless of whether they are academically or vocationally inclined. There are currently eight schools within the MAT and an adult education community interest company. The trust provides education for almost 5,800 students, with a budget of c.£44m.The trust's goal is to expand by adding to these regions so that each has between five and eight schools, maximising the opportunities available to students, staff and the local communities.

The board seeks two business leaders with board-level experience in

  • Entrepreneurial and Business Management or
  • Financial Management/Accountability or
  • Data Analysis/ Management or digital/technology

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 - 24 months:

  • Growth. The trust is looking to grow, and that growth has to take into account the geography where were it has a presence. The trust is keen to expand in the primary sector as it currently only has one primary school. There is the potential to develop other secondary schools and add to the atypical secondaries, (the trust has two schools which provide education for the ages 14-19 with very close links to employers). There is also potential to expand the Adult Learning provision using experience from the college in London.
  • The trust wants to further develop their employer relationships to align with their aspirations with enterprise and entrepreneurship.
  • The trust aims to continue their ambitions for levelling up aspirations given that they work in areas where there are high proportions of students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • What's involved?

  • Board governance in education is a strategic, 'eyes on, hands off' commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours' time per month.

    • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
