The opportunity

We currently have a full-time open-term opportunity for a Legal Counsel to join QIC's Risk, Legal and Tax team (RLT) in Brisbane and work as a trusted advisor to the QIC Global Real Estate (GRE) investment team. You will join a collaborative and dedicated GRE Legal team to deliver outstanding results. Although you will advise the GRE team we welcome applications from those in areas other than real estate who also have extensive contracts experience.

Specifically your focus will be:
  • providing legal services and advice to work groups within GRE, working under the supervision and guidance of the Senior Legal Counsel;
  • drafting and negotiating various types of agreements for the GRE business;
  • assisting with the legal work arising from the GRE development pipeline (both advice work and contract preparation), and providing legal support to project teams to mitigate and manage risk during the construction phase of projects;
  • delivering high quality legal services and advice to GRE;
  • working effectively with the work groups within GRE to deliver the best overall result for the portfolio;
  • ensuring commercial goals are met within acceptable levels of legal risk;
  • assisting in the development of policies and guidelines for the operations of GRE and RLT;
  • ensuring QIC's policies and values are adhered to
  • enhancing legal team tools including precedents, libraries and document management systems;
  • establishing strong working relationships with all relevant stakeholders;
  • assisting the Senior Legal Counsel to monitor compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; and
  • conducting and reporting on legal research.

The ideal candidate

As a strong candidate for this role, you must be admitted as a legal practitioner in Queensland with at least 4-8 years' PAE. Applications by more experienced practitioners would also be welcomed. Knowledge and understanding of the retail and commercial real estate industries would be highly regarded but are not required.

You must be able to demonstrate:
  • extensive experience drafting and negotiating contracts;
  • broad legal knowledge across wide variety of areas of law relevant to the GRE business;
  • commercial acumen to ensure the advice provided meets both business and legal requirements;
  • ability to provide advice on a broad range of legal issues under the supervision of the Senior Legal Counsel;
  • skills in legal research;
  • ability to effectively manage time and to meet deadlines; and
  • demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve strong commercial outcomes
