The Legal & Compliance team are now recruiting for a Senior Compliance Monitoring Officer to fill a role within the Monitoring and Assurance team. The main purpose of the role is to ensure Next remains compliant with all FCA rules, guidance & principles, by undertaking monitoring and assurance work under a risk-based monitoring plan. This includes regular & scheduled monitoring to ensure the delivery of good consumer outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Monitoring and Assurance

  • Complete assigned compliance reviews in accordance with the compliance assurance programme
  • Plan and evaluate the scope and testing approach for compliance reviews
  • Build and execute compliance assurance reviews which assess the effectiveness of the business’ compliance risk and controls
  • Conduct field work inline with the agreed programme
  • Write reports which include presentation of results, the rationale for findings, risks posed and actions required
  • Develop recommendations for corrective actions based on findings
  • Apply strong analytical and reasoning skills to rate outcomes
  • Track actions through to completion
  • Engage with business pre and post testing; monitoring and verifying the completion of actions which help the business demonstrate positive compliance with its regulatory and legal obligations
  • Examine policies, procedures and processes to ensure compliance with laws and regulations
  • Maintain a broad knowledge of the business and the regulatory framework in which Next operates
  • Manage the execution of reviews and escalate appropriately
  • Support the development of the team by training less experienced members

Risk management

  • A strong understanding of effective risk management across a large organisation
  • Ensuring the regulatory risk landscape is understood and appropriately documented to facilitate effective management
  • Management, maintenance and presentation of key compliance critical to quality measures to all relevant stakeholders


Required skills

  • Experience in a Compliance Assurance role with an ability to demonstrate thematic work, control testing, outcome testing, policy assurance and transactional monitoring - minimum experience is two years
  • Understanding the delivery of good consumer outcomes
  • One or more of the below is required:
    • Knowledge and experience of working in an FCA/PRA regulated firm and experience of providing multiple types of assurance to FCA rules
    • Extensive knowledge of data protection/privacy assurance which can be demonstrated
    • Extensive knowledge of information security testing
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, challenging, dynamic and demanding environment with changing priorities
  • Ability to practically apply an approach to compliance in a form and style that is appropriate to the business
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to summarise at high level as-well-as explain detail findings clearly and concisely, strong communicator
  • Ability to apply root cause analysis to findings in order to create effective actions
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workloads whilst working to strict deadlines
  • Strategic thinker with analytical and problem solving abilities
  • Ability to constructively challenge and question
