This is an opportunity to contribute to the community of Bolton by becoming an Academy Ambassador at The Bishop Fraser. Board meetings are held across Bolton when safe to do so.

The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The opportunity

The Bishop Fraser Trust is a Church of England multi-academy trust operating across Bolton. The trust seeks up to two non-executive directors/trustees to join its Board, with skills in finance, property, marketing or education. The trust has a diverse school population across its three schools, which are all situated across Bolton in differing economic areas. The trust was founded to provide the opportunity for its schools to share skills and resources providing for greater efficiencies and opportunities to retain and develop the best staff. The schools within the trust support each other to promote and develop further high quality education in a Christian context in Bolton. Board meetings are held in the Bolton area. Applicants of all faiths or of no faith are welcomed.

The board seeks two senior/business leaders with board level experience in

  • finance at CFO level or
  • property or
  • marketing or
  • education

Due to multiple roles, candidate will possess one or more of the above skills.

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 - 24 months:

  • Managing the effects of the pandemic: The trust has worked very effectively throughout the Covid pandemic but as it operates in an area which has been hit particularly badly, the trust continues to monitor the impact on staff and students;
  • Further improving progress: Ensuring catch-up systems are in place and effective;
  • Curriculum Developments: The trust seeks to establish a strategic vision with regards to the development of ICT across its three schools.

Longer term plans:

  • Finance: Consolidate finance plans to ensure long-term sustainability of the trust.
  • Capital build: Review the need for capital build improvements
  • Growth: The trust aims to review current plans and explore potential growth.

What's involved?

Board governance in education is a strategic, 'eyes on, hands off' commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours' time per month.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our ambassador network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role.

All roles are pro bono.
