In a nutshell

Reporting into the Head of Business Risk & Controls, this role will be accountable for the effective design and implementation of the business control testing framework across SBAFS through the management of colleagues within Process Key Control testing and Supply Chain Assurance. The successful person will work as part of the wider 1 st line risk leadership team to raise the quality standards within the function and ensure the success of the wider business.

We'd like the role holder to support all Senior Management in executing their Accountable Individual and SMR accountabilities by providing evidence-based input to support decision making and support the 2 nd line risk teams in their accountabilities to the PRA and any regulatory reporting requirements.

What you need to do
  • We want you to take the lead on the design and implementation of a company-wide control testing and assurance framework.
  • You will be accountable for co-ordinating all control testing, risk assurance, thematic testing, and external specialist testing across both SBAFS.
  • You'll be ensuring that the control testing/assurance tools, techniques, and methodologies remain in line with industry best practise and deliver confidence to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • We'd like you to research technology/automation advancements in the market for testing and make recommendations to Senior Management on innovation opportunities together with cost benefits for the company.
  • You will oversee the reporting of the control testing/risk assurance output and ensure that key messages and recommendations are of the highest quality.
  • Engage with Senior Management across both SBAFS to ensure that the output of the QA oversight testing is incorporated into the annual Training and Competence framework.
  • We want you to oversee the creation of the SBAFS supplier assurance programme and ensure the output is of the highest quality.
  • You will provide strong people leadership to your direct reports and wider team to ensure performance management, talent management and colleague development is line to generate a high performing culture.

What you need to know & show

The role requires a detailed level of technical knowledge across all areas of operational risk, internal audit, retail banking and finance in general. This needs to be complemented by a holistic understanding of the environment in which the Bank operates, advanced control testing/auditing technics and the ability to generate high quality written output.

You must be able to communicate clearly and effectively (regardless of subject matter or technical difficulty) across a range of senior stakeholders as well as demonstrate the key skills/experience below:
  • You will have demonstrable experience working within each of the 3 Lines of Defence model at a senior level within the financial services industry.
  • We'd like you to have experience working within the professionals' sector, specifically in an auditing/process control capacity.
  • You will have managed teams within a matrix management organisation.
  • You will have strong report writing skills in complex multi-functional projects & have strong awareness of the control environment.
  • We want you to have in depth knowledge of retail banking products together with knowledge of consumer credit products (such as store cards) within the retail sector.
  • You must be able to demonstrate a strong background in audit and risk.
  • Ideally you will also have an extensive external network of contacts within the risk industry.
  • We want you to have proven speaking, presentation, and facilitation experience at various Risk committees as well as exemplary report writing skills.
