Job Description

Smiths Detection in Hemel Hempstead is seeking a Financial Analyst to join the company on a permanent basis.

The individual will support the financial management of the division's product & technology activities, working closely with the Finance Director, Operations, Service Technology & Systems and the rest of the Global Products & Technology team. This will include supporting all financial planning and strategic assessments of the Products and Technology business, as well as the maintenance of strong financial controls for research and development cost and capitalized developments. In addition, the individual will provide occasional, ad-hoc support to the Smiths Detection HQ finance team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Financial Planning: Support the Products & Technology financial planning process for all quarterly, annual and strategic financial plans. Support the communication and presentation of financial plans to Smiths Detection management and stakeholders.
  • Management & Financial Information: Preparation of monthly functional financial performance reports.
  • Commercial & financial analysis: Provide pro-active analytical support to financial value assessments of new product development investments making recommendations for process improvement opportunities where necessary. Preparation of accurate and timely financial information to support ongoing product development initiatives.
  • Capitalised development: Support the periodic review process for capitalised developments ensuring carrying values are appropriate and supporting external auditors in their review.
  • Performance: Providing analytical support to regular reviews of all aspects of the business' product & technology functions in order to monitor and drive performance and identify areas requiring greater focus.
  • Resourcing: Providing support, on a regular basis, to assessments of whether the business has sufficiently aligned its products & technology resources in order to achieve its strategic and commercial objectives.
  • Support: Ensuring quality financial information is available for all key project boards and decision making panels.
  • Internal Controls: Ensure adequate financial controls in place to protect assets and ensure compliance.
  • Business Cases: The verification of larger capital expenditures requests, benefit assumptions and post completion reviews.
  • Policies & Procedures: Ensure the business is compliant with all Smiths Group financial policies and procedures, such as delegation of authority, expense procedures, capex applications, foreign exchange, etc. Complying with and promoting all relevant legal requirements & Smiths policies and procedures, including business ethics, data protection and health & safety.
  • Risk Management: Ensure that there is an effective risk management process in place to mitigate key problems and issues.
  • Communication: maintain open and clear lines of communications with all relevant stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: drive efficiencies within Finance team and wider business, including looking for opportunities to transfer further transaction processing work into shared services. Challenging the business on all areas of process and cost control.
  • Ad-hoc projects/requests: complete various ad-hoc projects as required, including the opportunity to get involved in SAP enhancements and support.
  • Finance Leadership: Contribute to the success of the Smiths Detection finance function through the support and implementation of key initiatives. As a member of the HQ finance team, contribute to the success of the Smiths Detection finance function by supporting the implementation of key initiatives.
  • Develop strong relationships with the operations management team and local finance teams to support close commercial interaction between the functions.

The Individual

  • Professionally qualified, (ACCA ACMA), and educated to a degree level.
  • Experience working with SAP is a significant advantage.
  • A conscientious approach to reporting and thirst for analysis and problem solving.
  • Comfortable working with different cultures.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Experience of dealing with large organisations and consolidations is an advantage.
  • The ability and motivation to persistently pursue and achieve effective results which drive the business forward.
  • The ability to monitor and manage the progress of multiple tasks during short turnaround times, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • The ability to build an effective network of relationships both internally and externally, understanding their customers' needs.
