What is the job?

GWR provides a vital service to key workers by transporting them in a Covid-19 safe way to their places of work. Our Accounts Payable team play an important part in GWR's ability to provide this service by ensuring that our suppliers of PPE, train equipment, spare parts and track access are paid on a timely basis. The team of 5 is currently working virtually and requires an experienced Accounts Payable manager to provide technical guidance, support, and structure to the team. You'll contribute your expertise in supplier statement reconciliations, engaging with suppliers, liaising with procurement teams and the business. You'll help improve the overall performance of the team as measured by our KPIs and streamline the delegated authority processes.

What will I be doing?

Your main responsibilities will be:
  • Day to day management of the AP function including line management of 5 staff, ensuring payments are made on time and appropriately approved
  • Ensuring that all transactions are accounted for correctly and accounting policies adhered to
  • Continually reviewing the internal controls associated with the day to day transactions of the business
  • Reconciling balance sheet accounts on a four-weekly basis
  • Ensuring compliance with GWR delegated authorities, all general ledger and balance sheet postings are appropriately authorised and supported
  • Assisting the team in cash management
  • Analysis of tax information and reporting of information to internal and external customers
  • Working with internal and external audit to ensure controls are in place to safeguard GWR's assets and liabilities
  • Safeguarding the financial and non-financial data and ensuring data is secure and data protection compliance is achieved against internal and external standards

What sort of person are you looking for?

You'll need to be:
  • A great people manager who can provide guidance, support, and structure to the team
  • Adaptable in your approach to meet the needs of the team
  • Someone who understands double entry accounting and relevant financial transactions
  • An excellent communicator, with the ability to explain often complex accounting transactions into simplified language
  • Able to implement process improvements and review and enhance existing controls
  • Adept at using IT, including excel, word and ideally SAP
  • A consummate professional with high levels of integrity
  • Someone who pays attention to detail and has the ability to process data efficiently and accurately
  • Able to highlight and identify risks and potential control issues

What do I need to have?
  • Demonstratable people management experience within an AP function
  • Experience working within a large Financial Accounting team
  • Part-qualified ACCA or CIMA

Where is the job?

The role is based in Milford House, Swindon, a short walk from the train station but due to COVID restrictions and the safety protocols you will be required to work from home with occasional days in office.
