Primary purpose of Manager - Accounting:Leadership of an operational accounting team; responsible for the day-to-day and special accounting functions applicable to Tallgrass Water.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Managing the annual budget process
  • Building an achievable plan to ensure all data items and operational input are received and built into budget in-line with corporate timeline.
  • Issuing detailed historical revenue and cost trends to facility managers for review
  • Conceptualizing anticipated volumes by customer by asset and applying any contractual rate changes
  • Applying contractual minimum commitment provisions following application of anticipated actuals
  • Coordinating and preparing business forecast
  • Calculate variances from prior forecast and the budget to report significant issues to management.
  • Deliver facility disclosure workbooks to facility managers for review, update, and application in time for consolidated review prior to flash deadline.
  • Apply all deferred, deficiency, and margin changes to the forecast with the ability to discuss variances in-depth with all stakeholders.

Business Support
  • Achieve full understanding of all current and new customer, vendor, and landowner contracts with the ability to communicate and administer all applicable detail relating to each.
  • Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process relating to day-to day operations and acquisitions.
  • Developing and monitoring business performance and operational metrics
  • Preparing ad hoc reports by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
  • Provides project/acquisition analysis by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data
  • Provide comprehensive financial and operational updates to senior management by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points.
  • Help develop and support short and long-term operational strategies.
  • Assist management with ad hoc financial decisions.
  • Achieve operational objectives by preparing and completing action plans; resolving problems; identifying trends; determining system improvements; and implementing change.

  • Water Accounting Team
    • Hiring, training and retaining skilled team-members.
    • Complete day-to-day and ad hoc requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.
    • Ensure quality control over customer transactions and contract adherence.
    • Provide day-to-day supervision and leadership for a team overseeing accounts receivable, accounts payable, contract implementation, customer/vendor/landowner relations, and measurement.
    • Drive process improvements through the development and monitoring of key metrics and implementation of more efficient tools.
    • Actively manage and develop staff through setting challenging goals and maintaining accountability in order to meet company-wide objectives.

    Day-to-Day Accounting
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are issued and collected promptly
  • Review and approval of multiple balance sheet account reconciliations on a monthly basis
  • Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting and Revenue Recognition
  • Support month-end and year-end close process within the division and throughout the parent entity
  • Implement a process to record and anticipate operating expense transactions by department and compare costs incurred to budget and performance analysis of responsibility centers.
  • Review and approval of journal entries required to reflect the monthly activity.
  • Review monthly accounting close process including analytical review of the monthly operating results to ensure accurate accounting records are maintained.
  • Maintain files and comply with record retention requirements.
  • Assist other departments by providing information; researching and interpreting data; and applying observations.

  • Process Improvement
    • Assessing current accounting functions, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes.
    • Oversight of evaluation, testing and implementation of accounting, billing and measurement software.

    • Development, accumulation, and delivery of information applicable to requests by external auditors.
    • Development and adherence to internal audit controls.
    • Take a lead role interacting with internal and external auditors in completing requests in a satisfactory and timely fashion.
    • Deal with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy and professionalism.
    • Speak clearly, both in person and by telephone, using a high level of verbal skills and listen carefully.
    • Will work non-traditional hours as needed.
    • Maintain a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Minimum requirements:

    • Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related relevant discipline is required.
    • A minimum of seven years direct work experience in midstream energy accounting, preferably water, and including volumetric accounting, may be considered as a substitute for a degree.

    Experience/Specific Knowledge:
    • Intermediate proficiency level in MS Office applications that may include but are not limited to Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

    Certifications, Licenses & Registrations:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel).

    • Proven communication skills, oral and written, with ability to communicate with a variety of individuals and personalities at all levels internally and outside the organization.

    • Job level commensurate with experience and skill sets; position will be filled depending on qualifications, experience and skill sets of the successful candidate.

    • Minimal travel may be required.
    • The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, including credit report for certain positions, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

    Above the minimum requirements; not required but advantageous in this position:
    • Knowledge of fresh water and water disposal operations, billing and accounting systems is a plus.
    • Strong skills in leading a group of accounts receivable and collections specialists
