The Irish Prison Service (IPS) is responsible for the provision of safe and secure custody, dignity of care and rehabilitation to people in custody for safer communities. The IPS operates as an executive office within the Department of Justice and Equality and is a key component in our country’s Criminal Justice system. It employs some 3,200 uniformed and civilian staff. Currently, the nationwide estate is made up of 12 prisons and a number of other ancillary offices and facilities. Typically, the IPS manages approximately 4,000 people in custody at any one time, both male and female, aged 18 and over.
The Professional Accountant Grade II post is based in the IPS Headquarters in Longford. The Accountant reports to the Assistant Principal Officer (Financial Control) and provides accounting support regarding Prison Shop accounts across 12 prison locations, including oversight of account preparation and liaison with prisons on Prison Shops regarding compliance with procedures, stocktakes and any other related queries. The Accountant is also responsible for management reporting and analysis of shop accounts, implementation of policy decisions and liaison with internal and external auditors on shop-related matters.
The position will require the post holder to engage with staff across all functions, and in all of the prisons, including the requirement to visit and work in sites across the estate.
