AGENCY OVERVIEW:

Catholic Charities is the official domestic relief agency of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Full Charge Accountant is responsible for maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures for the Finance Department. This person has tight deadlines and addresses a multitude of accounting activities, including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities. This position works very closely with the Financial Controller as well as Program Managers and is a strong, contributing member of the organization. This position has the option of working in the office or remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting, general ledger structure, and other related system.
  • Review and report for individual grants and contracts for compliance with private, local, state and federal fund requirements.
  • Ensure that monthly and quarterly Bank Compliance and Credit Card activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information, statements and records including periodic grant reporting.
  • Provide regular support for the Financial Controller with the monthly closing procedures and balance sheet work papers.
  • Provide assistance with the preparation of monthly financial statements as well as custom financial reports.
  • Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Serve as project leader for software implementation and other special projects.
  • Back up accounts payable and payroll.
  • Assist in Program audits as needed.
  • Run general ledger reports and conduct variance analysis.
  • Participate in trainings and coordination meetings as requested by Supervisor.
  • Adherence to Catholic Charities policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent lived and or worked experience required.
  • 5 years' experience in accounting, finance or related field required.
  • Ability to effectively work with standard office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Teams and PowerPoint and accounting software (Sage Intacct and Concur preferred); 10-key by touch.
  • Experience working with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll functions, preferably in a nonprofit accounting office.
  • Knowledge and understanding of 501(c)(3) non-profit organization accounting requirements.
  • Demonstrate judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters.
  • Commitment to Catholic Charities mission to work in partnership with vulnerable populations to achieve lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities to ensure goals are met in a timely manner. High attention to detail required.

  • Strong analytical and strategic problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in team setting, as well as independently; be flexible and adapt well to different dynamics in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Must have driver's license, access to vehicle and ability to obtain automobile insurance at levels required by agency (100/300/100).
  • Satisfactory results from criminal, civil and/or motor vehicle background check required.
