Position Summary

The Division of Human Resources is seeking an Accountant 3 to join its business and finance team. We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented individual with a strong accounting and finance background and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting all aspects of HR's finance portfolio, including day to day monitoring of revenues and expenses for UNM's self-insured medical and dental plans. This individual is also responsible for overseeing UNM's Salary Planner system as a component of the annual budget development process, and must collaborate closely with fiscal and technical leadership in several core offices across campus. Specifically, HR's Accountant 3 responsibilities include:
  • Oversees daily processing and accounting for revenue and expenditures for all aspects of the Division of Human Resources; ensures accuracy, completeness, and compliance with university, local, state, and federal requirements, and standard accounting and audit procedures.
  • Monitor and maintains key accounting information for HR's operating ledger and general ledger accounts.
  • Processes payment of all invoices for claims and insurance premiums for UNM's self-insured medical plan and other UNM health/welfare benefits; reconciles and maintains UNM's self-insurance reserve.
  • Serves as the primary administrator and subject matter expert for Salary Planner. Manages the annual Salary Planner process, which includes creating Salary Planner scenarios, managing refreshes, and managing the data upload process from Salary Planner to Banner. Supports department users throughout the Salary Planner process.
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate revenue and expense levels for HR's internal service centers, including UNMTemps and HR Shared Services. Posts billing charges to departments and reconciles revenue and expense activity on a regular basis.
  • Interprets and analyzes financial operations and transactions, forecasts trends, and develops special complex reports and analyses for Division management and University Leadership.
  • Prepares, reviews, and processes budget, revenue, expense, payroll, and related entries including JVs, PHAREDS, and ePAFs,
  • Performs transaction initiation, requisition, or journaling duties, such as processing purchasing requisitions, direct pay requests, journal vouchers, PCard purchases, and Chrome River reimbursements.
  • Reviews purchasing, travel, and personnel requests for availability of funding, mathematical accuracy, coding and distribution of account numbers, and adherence to funding regulations and university policy; will also be responsible for originating or preparing these documents; processes complex invoices for payments.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience with the following:
  • Strong commitment to customer service, and providing exceptional support to departments and staff across campus.
  • Experience using Banner Finance for fiscal transactions and reconciliations, including Banner 9/INB and Banner Self-Service
  • Experience with Banner Budget Planner and Salary Planner systems and processes
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
  • Knowledge of UNM fiscal policies and procedures
  • Experience processing transactions in Banner, Lobomart, Chrome River, or other similar finance application/system.
  • Experience using UNM reporting systems to run reports and conduct analysis, including advanced MyReports tools such as InfoAssist and Guided Ad-Hocs.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet/database tool, including experience with functions, pivot tables, charts, and macros.
