The Office of Business Operations of the University of Virginia has an exciting opportunity for a Finance Manager to join their team. The Finance Manager will perform the following functions: perform financial analysis, budget, and reporting initiatives for unit; implement budget, revenue and expense allocations as part of the strategic financial plan; collect, analyze and report accurate and timely data to ensure operational goals are met; manage special financial projects and serve as manager of the consolidated financial reporting and analysis system for the Business Operations units. The ideal candidate will have a high level of proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), strong analytical skills, financial reporting experience, and excellent written and oral communication skills.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Develop, analyze and review budget proposals for services units supported by Business Operations
  • Provide interpretation and recommendations regarding all levels of financial activity. Plan, coordinate, and execute policy implementation applicable to the installation of improved financial operations. Provide specialized technical analysis to determine present and future financial performance.
  • Operates to affect, interpret, or implement operating practices.
  • Processes, produces and reconciles finances and financial transactions.
  • Gather and organize information from a variety of sources to establish reporting and data banks for use in analyzing and creating future plans and forecasts. Prepare and present reports of findings and recommendations to management.
  • Assess unit income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for the University, and research financial information to make well-informed decisions about future investments.
  • Assess the University's past performance to provide an estimate of future performance. Study financial data to prepare forecasts of economic conditions and prepare financial reports for proposed future pricing for management and Board of Visitor approval.
  • Perform data mining, construct database table, build queries and reports to consolidate required data reporting, work with power pivots, Qlik and other statistical tools to provide accurate reporting for the Business Unit's needs.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance or accounting. Extensive finance and operations experience with a Bachelor's degree may be considered in lieu of a finance degree.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of professional experience working with both operations and financial management, including advanced knowledge of financial principles and analytical techniques. Knowledge and experience with Oracle or similar financial database systems is also required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education service-related setting with in-depth knowledge of accounting, finance, financial reporting systems, data mining and data manipulation.
  • Experience in IT/finance/operational cross-functional projects and developing presentations for senior management and knowledge of policies and procedures in a state-funded higher education system.
  • Preferred Licensure: CMA, CFA, CTP, or CPA.


Anticipated hire range: $60,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check prior to their first day of employment per University policy.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
