Are you a hands-on accounting manager who has experience working in the title and escrow industry? Do you appreciate the chance to influence and build processes that improve efficiencies and internal controls? Do you enjoy managing the daily aspects of title and escrow trust accounts, including handling deposits and remittances to underwriters, verifying revenue recognition as per US GAAP, investigating account discrepancies, and more? And, would you appreciate working for a company that has an award-winning Best Places to Work culture?

Modus is the fastest growing Title & Escrow company in Washington and nationally, and we're also a technology startup where we are bringing the power of online tools to life to create transparent, easy-to-understand experiences for all parties involved in residential real estate closings. We're part of the Compass Community, with a strong mission to digitize a full end-to-end home buying and closing experience for anyone. If you would be excited to help us scale our accounting function for upcoming expansion, and to transform an antiquated industry in a booming market, we'd like to hear from you!

Your day-to-day:
    • Own the daily maintenance of title and escrow activities, including funds management (incoming and outgoing), resolution of account discrepancies and account reconciliations
    • Proactively manage issue resolution and account discrepancies by collaborating with internal teams, underwriters, and escrow and title officers
    • Oversee and own the daily reconciliation of funds received in the trust accounts
    • Maintain monthly balance sheet account reconciliations
    • Own the month-end close process in accordance with US GAAP
    • Collaborate with the corporate accounting team on the monthly analytics package
    • Create and distribute accurate internal reports
    • Assist with building and maintaining a system of policies and procedures that impose an adequate level of control over title and escrow activities
    • Ensure proper controls are operating effectively and collaborate with the accounting team on improvements
    • Drive process improvement for title and escrow procedures across various markets
    • Coordinate underwriter audits related to the trust accounts
    • Coordinate state audits for Washington, Florida, and any future markets
    • Coordinate with external auditors regarding the financial audit as well as controls testing
    • Other ad-hoc projects (we are a startup, you get to wear multiple hats!)

What you bring:
    • A combination of private industry and public accounting knowledge
    • Strong planning and organization skills: some processes are built, some are not, so you will need to balance short- and long-term needs
    • Prior experience designing, implementing and documenting policies and procedures in a SOX environment
    • Strong attention to detail: you are able to juggle, navigate and track multiple projects at once
    • A sense of ownership and thoroughness: you proactively follow up on action items to ensure that no balls are dropped, and that all critical milestones are met
    • A flexible, can-do attitude: you can and will pivot as needed, you are excited to try new ways of doing things, and you look forward to sharing ideas to help us refine our recipe for success
    • Your BUILDER mentality: you are excited about playing a role in building and growing a brand new company
    • Experience with Quickbooks, NetSuite, SoftPro and RynohLive a plus
    • Bachelor's degree (or higher), preferably in Accounting
    • CPA required
    • At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years of title and escrow experience

What's in it for you:

As we continue our work to create the world's most simple, modernized real estate experience available to everyone, we need more driven builders who want to innovate on an antiquated process. You will have the opportunity to contribute in significant ways to our mission and vision, to grow with the company, and to enjoy a people-first culture that allows you to bring your best self to work every day.
