The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for an Accounting Manager in Chattanooga, TN the Southern Territory Headquarters, located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Job Summary

Plans, implements, supervises, and participates in the day-to-day administration of the Great Plains Accounting Program for an assigned region by using a functionalized double-entry accounting package. Provides overall supervision and review of accounting records, ledgers and statements for accuracy and completeness. Supervises Accountants responsible for performing double-entry accounting work necessary to prepare and maintain an assigned region's chart of accounts, journals, fiscal closing statements, bank accounts, general ledger, asset management and depreciation, etc. Serves as liaison and technical support between the assigned local units and Divisional Headquarters.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission, philosophy, culture, protocol, and organizational structure. Knowledge of accepted principles, methods, and practices of computerized double-entry fund accounting as well as finance, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Knowledge of Lotus 123, Excel, Word and accounting software in general. Knowledge of the principles and practices of general business administration, supervision, and management. Ability to evaluate the organizations accounting and financial functions, respond to deficiencies by identifying and implementing appropriate corrective actions, develop and administer sound policies, procedures, and budgets. Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate the quality of work performed by Accountant staff and to provide effective and timely direction and assistance to ensure compliance with established procedures, accepted practices, and quality standards. Ability to integrate and interpret data from various sources and to plan, develop, and implement responsible strategies. Ability to scrutinize financial reports and documents in order to ensure integrity, accuracy, and completeness. Ability to make sound, logical interpretations of established guidelines and regulations quickly. Ability to apply discretion and independent judgment when processing, analyzing, and resolving routine accounting transactions and reporting in accordance with accepted accounting principles.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in an effective and professional manner. Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial records. Ability to discharge the duties and responsibilities of this position consistent with the principles, standards, and the Orders and Regulations of The Salvation Army. Ability to organize, lead, develop and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with all Finance Department Personnel, Salvation Army officers and employees, and professionals in the community. Ability to conduct the affairs of this office responsibly, efficiently, and economically. Ability to conduct and lead group presentations. Possess knowledge of efficient methods of organizing, maintaining, and securing financial records. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all information associated with the job.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field, and four years progressively responsible experience performing double-entry computerized accounting work with Great Plains accounting experience preferred and two years' experience supervising subordinate accounting staff, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to do finance returns and other reports required by the federal, state etc.

Physical Requirements

Ability to meet attendance and work performance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to drive a vehicle for extended trips. Ability to keypunch information into a computer. Ability to perform routine and complex mathematical computations repeatedly, rapidly, and accurately. Ability to operate various general office equipment including a computer and 10-key calculator. Ability to operate various general office equipment including a telephone, computer, fax machine and adding machine. Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines. Ability to plan work priorities, evaluate work performance and provide recommendations for improving productivity and efficiency of work. Ability to work independently and with limited supervision with advice and assistance not always readily available. Ability to work with general policies and procedures with some latitude for interpretation. Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized. Ability to work through a variety of conventional problems, questions and/or situations in conformance with established accounting and organizational rules, guidelines, and procedures. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work involves traveling to various locations in assigned region where there may be physical discomforts associated with travel.
