The Role Responsibilities

- Set the transactional tax risk appetite for these businesses and oversee implementation and monitor effective operation of controls or processes required as a condition of any approval(s) to remain within risk appetite.
- Influence business strategy and related entity, liquidity and capital management strategies to take an after-tax view.
- Influence development of tax policy and enacting legislation relevant to business units that is sustainable and achieves the policy objectives with minimum compliance and compliance costs.
- Facilitate business transactions and support to the businesses as required - provide prompt, concise advice, and practical solutions and quantify tax implications such that the business is able to transact in a timely manner and takes tax costs/ risks appropriately into account.
- Providing innovative solutions to support business objectives in the most tax efficient manner (including external lobbying where applicable) .
- Maintain relationships with key business & relevant associated stakeholders.
- Oversee the provision by external advisers of business tax advice to business.
- Ensure tax clauses in standard terms and an effective exceptions process operates.
- Sign off tax aspects of formal approvals such as global product programmes or business specific change in structure forms.
- Ensure impact assessments are undertaken for tax law changes with a material impact on the business tax profile.
- Proactively keep on top of tax developments & keep relevant business and associated stakeholders informed of significant impacts of these developments where relevant.
- Support Group/Country tax teams in the management of tax audits and controversies where required.
- Work closely with Country tax teams and Tax Specialist groups (Indirect, Transfer Pricing & CTI teams) to provide support to businesses.
- Proactively pursue tax savings/efficiencies evidenced through efficient structuring of transactions and/or tax advisory BAU work.
- Proactively identify and execute on value opportunities that are consistent with the Group's Approach to Tax and Tax Policy
- Provide tax support to mainly multi-country corporate restructuring, acquisitions, disposals and mergers of businesses and legal entities, setting up or liquidation of joint ventures, new businesses and new country entry or exits generally led by Group Corporate Development, Principal Finance and SC Ventures.
- Review and negotiate tax terms in legal documentation such as sales and purchase agreements, tax deeds, etc.
- Assess and identify tax risks, advise if and how to address them and escalate where necessary.
- Facilitate the sign off of formal approvals such as investment and divestment memos and corporate structure change forms.
- Input into Businesses Process Universe where appropriate and where agreed under the Tax Standards
- Complete tax risk assessment for each business area.
- Ensure control assurance framework is sufficient to maintain tax avoidance risk within risk tolerance and to identify relevant tax compliance obligations, including transfer pricing and indirect & transactional taxes to the relevant process owner or specialist (where applicable).
- Deliver training to business and related control functions to support compliance with Tax Standards.
- Ensure judgmental decisions regarding application of the Group's Approach to Tax and Tax Policy to transactions are appropriately escalated with a recommendation.
- Provide subject matter expertise to Financial Crime Compliance, as requested, with regard to tax evasion aspects of financial crime compliance.
- Lead through example and build the appropriate culture and values. Set appropriate tone and expectations from their team and work in collaboration with risk and control partners.
- Employ, engage and retain high quality people, with succession planning for critical roles.
- Ensure that e ffective supervision is in place and appropriate ongoing training and development is available.
- Set and monitor job descriptions and objectives for direct reports and provide feedback and rewards in line with their performance against those responsibilities and objectives.
- Take personal responsibility for understanding the risk and compliance requirements of the role and communicating the same to the team. Understand and comply with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws and regulations, including those governing anti-money laundering, terrorist financing and sanctions; the Group's policies and procedures; and the Group Code of Conduct. Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk and compliance matters.
- Embed the Group's values and code of conduct to ensure that adherence with the highest standards of ethics, and compliance with relevant policies, processes and regulations among employees form part of the culture.
- Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group's Values and Code of Conduct.
- Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank. This includes understanding and ensuring compliance with, in letter and spirit, all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and the Group Code of Conduct.
- Lead the CF, M&A Business and SC Ventures Tax teams to achieve the outcomes set out in the Bank's Conduct Principles: Fair Outcomes for Clients; Effective Financial Markets; Financial Crime Compliance; The Right Environment.
- Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.

Our Ideal Candidate
- Professional Accountancy or Taxation qualification, CPA or CTA equivalent
- Significant post qualification international tax experience including direct experience of product/ transaction focused in-house Banking role. Advanced
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, able to simplify complex tax matters for business stakeholders. Advanced
- Capability to make sensible, real-time commercial and risk judgements and provide practical solutions. Advanced
- Track record of delivery in a complex, global environment, including delivering the tax organisation on multi-jurisdictional transactions. Advanced
- Credibility and communication skills to influence relevant tax policy development. Advanced
- Capable people manager with excellent leadership skills and the ability to engage across a network located in multiple locations. Advanced
- Knowledge of international tax legislation generally together with a good understanding of banking products & regulation as well as experience in M&A related transaction structuring is crucial. Knowledge of one or both of UK and US law would be well regarded. Advanced
