Our Team:

The Budget and Finance Team within the SC Johnson College of Business supports strategic and transactional financial operations across our three schools, our central college unit and the Statler Hotel across our two campuses in Ithaca and NYC. This team consists of individuals who take a progressive approach to financial planning and reporting, utilizing data-driven techniques and tools to support our College's mission and enhance our organizational effectiveness.

This Position:

The Associate Financial Analyst works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and leadership within the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business to provide financial oversight, budgeting, reporting, and analysis activities related to sponsored research activities and Dyson School programs and operations. This role will work under the general direction of the Finance Manager, and is a highly engaged and collaborative member of the greater finance team that serves as an expert in research administration, specifically post-award management.

The Associate Financial Analyst will work closely with supported faculty and associated program managers to provide financial support for various and sometimes complex, sponsored and non-sponsored awards. This includes, but is not limited to collaborating, providing budgetary guidance and suggestions, reporting, personnel management, and various other tasks such as budget modifications, no cost extensions, technical report assistance, and subaward oversight.

In addition, this position will manage Dyson School programs and provide financial guidance in collaboration with the program business owners/coordinators requiring annual budget and reforecast assistance, monthly account review and follow-up tasks, account guidance, and customer service. This position will review and approve the student/temp hire requests, manage the Workday queue, monitor and update Dyson School personnel appointments, and have specific oversight of the Dyson Faculty Renewal Initiatives (FRI) and Professorship funding.

It will be expected that the Associate Financial Analyst stays current in Cornell University policies and procedures related to finance and research administration, participates in the annual budget process and reforecast, attends various meetings and functions, and also engages in professional development activities, while also providing back-up support to other team members and the Finance Manager.

Required Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree; technical/vocational school degree or equivalent; 2-3 years or equivalent of experience.
  • Accounting experience and/or formal coursework in accounting applications is required. Must be able to understand and accurately apply account numbers, object codes, rules, and policies to transactions and understand impact on financial statements.
  • Must be able to exercise judgement and professionalism managing sometimes sensitive or confidential information/situations.
  • Must be able to compile, analyze, and report on complex financial data verbally and in writing.
  • Must have previous experience or training related to research administration; completion of Research Administration Certification Program (RACP) required within one year after hire (if not already obtained).
  • Excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work with a broad range of constituents.
  • Attention to detail, organization skills, and prioritization skills required.
  • Able to work quickly and effectively under pressure, using judgment in accomplishing urgent tasks or of a sensitive or confidential nature; balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices.
  • Demonstrates accountability in all work responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates a high level of proficiency with Excel, and experience with other standard office programs.
  • Must be flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working and contributing in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm while maintaining a positive and productive demeanor.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in team environments - both in leading and individual contributor roles - using judgment to escalate matters to management as necessary to resolve.
  • Must willing and able to enhance personal knowledge, skills, and abilities to grow and excel.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 2 - 4 years' concentrated experience in a financial office setting, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • 2 - 4 years' experience working with sponsored research financials, including familiarity with 2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance, as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Familiarity with both general University and sponsored specific policies.
  • Experience with human resources and compensation processes, policies, and laws.
  • Expertise in Workday, Kuali Financial Systems (KFS), OBIEE dashboards, and OBIEE Answers.
  • Familiarity with Cornell University or other higher education environment.
  • Experience with grant writing, pre-proposal submission, and post-award financial management.
