Could you be an Academy Ambassador in Kendal? Stramongate School Academy Trust (SSAT) seeks one non-executive/director to join its board.

The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.

The opportunity

A single school academy trust, comprising the primary-only Stramongate School, located in Kendal, Cumbria, one new trustee/non-executive director is sought, possessing skills in Risk and Finance principally. The trust aims to undertake robust succession planning and mitigate any risks, including budgetary, going forward. Trust board meetings are held at Stramongate School, Blackhall Road, Kendal.

The board seeks one business leader with expertise in

  • Finance and
  • Risk

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:

  • Succession governance planning: In order to ensure seamless succession planning they are looking to strengthen business skills on their board.
  • Rationalise and stabilize budget: There is a falling roll in Kendal and at Stramongate School which has impacted on annual funding. The board need to make strategic budget decisions which do not impact negatively on pupil outcomes.
  • They are looking at incorporating the nursery provision into the Trust and extending the school age range.

What’s involved?

Board governance in education is a strategic, ‘eyes on, hands off’ commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours’ time per month.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent
