Job Description

To provide accounting and financial reporting guidance and counsel to management and other functional areas on IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts. This position reports to the AVP, Global Accounting Policy.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide support for quarterly IFRS 17 reporting. Assist with template development of standardized disclosure files for retrieving GL-based disclosures.
  • Support upcoming rounds of actuarial test feeds to the GL. Assist with reconciling actuarial vendor reports to the GL. Provide support to the segments in researching differences and communicate consolidated test results to the actuarial system vendor.
  • Assist with chart of account remaps by comparing proposed changes to IFRS 17 chart of accounts in the GL.
  • Support the accounting and reporting of transitional opening adjustments for all segments/portfolios/subgroups.
  • Prepare and co-ordinate IFRS 17 transitional and going forward note disclosures.
  • Provide IFRS 17 advisory services to functional areas such as presentation and disclosure policy interpretations and quality reviews of accounting models.
  • Participate and lead ad hoc accounting policy projects with cross-divisional impacts, ensuring that deliverables are on time and within quality targets. Special projects may be related to the implementation of new accounting or regulatory requirement or new operational initiative.
  • Assist in training on IFRS 17 accounting within the Finance community and other Business Units.
  • Assist review of quarterly and year-end financial statements and note disclosure.
  • Liaise with regulators and external auditors as vital.

Experience and Qualifications
  • Professional accounting designation required (e.g., Chartered Professional Accountant, Certified Public Accountant).
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in an insurance or financial services environment preferably gained at a Big 4 public accounting firm or other large insurance company.
  • A strong financial background with a broad knowledge of the financial services sectors and the insurance business in particular.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead/handle projects of various sizes.
  • Ability to learn/apply a large amount of technical accounting materials.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to cope in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills - for report writing and communication at all levels of management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and establish priorities to meet tight deadlines.
  • Flexible when working with changing deliverables.
  • A team player who possesses a positive attitude and customer service focus.
