An industry-leading third-party logistics (3PL) company seeks a VP of Accounting to join their Los Angeles team.

Summary:Reports the financial condition of all company operations to the CFO and executive team accurately and in accordance with GAAP on a monthly (5,4,4 weekly periods) basis. Provides periodic account analysis to make sure all balance sheet accounts are maintained on an accurate basis in accordance with GAAP. Leads the annual audit and coordinates tax planning and compliance functions with the outside CPA firm.

Successful candidates will have a proven track record of building problem solving teams that incorporate operating, finance and accounting staff and will be very comfortable working with all levels of operating employees including line managers up to executive management. Team building is a key ingredient in this role and we will only consider candidates who have a proven (and verifiable) track record of building successful teams.

The company is privately held with operating management and accounting functions headquartered in El Segundo, California. The accounting department is staffed with approximately 25 professional and clerical employees that report up to the VP Accounting who then reports to the CFO. The accounting function includes corporate accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll departments along with oversight of NetSuite administration and execution.

Responsibilities
  • Leads preparation of monthly financial statements by operating entities to ensure reporting is accurate, in accordance with GAAP and in compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Serves as the company's expert on GAAP during discussions of accounting policies, alternatives on reporting and financial planning.
  • Presents the results of operations and related reporting to the executive team.
  • Budgets and forecasts the company's balance sheet and the related statement of cash flows.
  • Maintains an effective cash management system to monitor daily cash balances and forecast future cash flows.
  • Monitors, evaluates and upgrades internal controls to make sure the company follows recognized best practices.
  • Monitors accounts receivable balances assure timely collection of accounts and accurate posting of customer payments.
  • Monitors accounts payable balances to determine that all liabilities are recorded on a timely basis and vendors are paid in accordance with company terms.
  • Provides monthly reporting to lenders on results of operations and covenant compliance.
  • Recruits and trains staff to provide timely and accurate reporting in accordance with best practices.
  • Leads monthly account analyses meetings with staff to ascertain that balance sheet accounts are reported correctly (in accordance with GAAP) and trains staff in proper account analysis practices and procedures.
  • Strives for continuous business process improvement in the accounting function.
  • Actively seeks new methods to reduce costs or improve profits.
  • Leads the annual audit with the outside CPA firm.
  • Leads tax planning and preparation of all tax returns with the outside CPA firm.
  • Manages the installation of ERP software and annual updates to be sure the company is operating on industry leading accounting and reporting software.
  • Manages key software relationships including NetSuite and Paycom.
  • Leads new software implementations including planned conversions to a new purchase order system and a new billing system.
  • Position is full-time and on-site


Qualifications
  • Ten years of financial leadership experience progressing to controller level positions or higher
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting with an MBA preferred
  • Some public accounting experience early in the candidate's career preferred
  • CPA certificate
  • Proven leadership skills which include recruiting and staffing to build a strong team to deliver accurate and timely reporting
  • Must be able to work as a team member with all levels of operating management
  • Skilled in Excel and the Microsoft Suite and able to teach requisite skills to staff
  • Advanced knowledge of NetSuite capabilities required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • 3PL experience preferred but not required
