Job Description

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President or Director of Internal Audit, the Manager, Internal Audit will be responsible for effective management and delivery of a portfolio of audits for Canada Life. As the Audit Manager, you will co-develop the audit plan through participation in risk assessment and ongoing monitoring activities, adjusting as required to meet the evolving needs of the organization and audit committee. You will lead a team of Audit Professionals in developing and executing detailed audit plans, that identify potential areas risk by assessing the adequacy of internal controls, determining compliance with government regulations and internal policies and procedures, evaluating efficiency and effectiveness of operations, and identifying improvement opportunities and working with business partners to ensure appropriate risk mitigation. In addition, the Audit Manager is responsible for communicating findings to management, coaching developing audit staff, and cultivating business relationships. As part of a team committed to innovation, you will take part in establishing new ways of working, such as agile auditing techniques and data analytics, to deliver high quality impactful audits.

Required Qualifications and Competencies:
  • University degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or other related field.
  • A recognized accounting designation (CPA or CIA).
  • 7+ years progressive audit experience is required. Experience working in a Big Four accounting firm or in the financial services industry is preferred.
  • Strong team leadership and project management skills demonstrated by:
    • Ability to drive execution
    • Coaching others through ambiguity and change;
    • Overseeing completion of multiple projects with completing priorities while meeting deadlines;
    • Establishing goals, measuring performance and providing ongoing feedback to audit staff; and
    • Creating and maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills, both verbal and written, including experience:
    • Delivering difficult messages;
    • Communicating with senior internal and external stakeholders with different information needs, interpretations and objectives;
    • Writing formal reports and decks, and creating high-quality work products with minimal guidance; and
    • Navigating ambiguity, simplifying complex topics and tailoring to your audience
  • Motivated, self-starter with a passion to learn and embrace new challenges.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to apply audit concepts in various functional areas.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain trusted business relationships and work collaboratively with other functional areas.
  • Experience performing data analytics and at least an intermediate level of Excel knowledge.
  • Experience interviewing stakeholders to gather information, effectively challenge and/or cut through ambiguity to understand the current state (i.e. within an audit or business analysis environment).
  • Strong research skills, with ability to distill down to the most relevant, impactful and credible information.
  • Detail-oriented in nature, with ability to consume mass amounts of information, synthesize and make connections across domains.
  • Passion for continuous development and education.


Desired Qualifications and Competencies
  • Big 4 or other client-serving consulting or audit experience.
  • Knowledge of agile project management methodology and experience using the Lean Six Sigma approach for process improvement
  • Relevant industry certifications from another domain
    • Project management (i.e. PMP, PRINCE2).
    • Continuous Improvement (i.e. A Lean Six Sigma Certification).
    • IT Audit or Security (i.e. CISA, CISSP)
    • Agile (i.e. CSM, PMI-ACP)
  • Experiencing working in an agile environment and strong knowledge of agile methodologies.
  • Cross functional knowledge and experience (e.g. risk, business, IT).
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and work effectively with teams in a complex matrix environment.
  • Experience working in Financial Institutions.
  • Knowledge of the Three Lines of Defense model.
