Insurance Underwriter / Account Manager JOB SUMMARY: This individual is responsible for day-to-day service of accounts assigned to them.  You must be able to meet with clients as required. This position is primary responsible for maintaining and increasing the penetration of the existing customer base, maintaining high quality customer satisfaction and retention as well as increasing market share. While in this position you are expected to provide excellent customer service, while expanding product penetration in existing business through cross-selling and increasing portfolio of products. The position requires flexibility in work schedule, including evening hours and some weekends. The candidate must be experienced in insurance broking or underwriting and must have sensible judgement and meticulous attention to detail. The candidate must ensure that accurate quotes are produced that are competitive to the customer in all aspects. RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities: Manage and retain existing book of business and pursue new opportunities for the book where appropriate. Responsible for over-all day to day service on account. Spend approximately 10-20% of the time outside with the customers. Provide customer relations with all levels of client's decision-makers as well as the day-to-day technical client representatives. Follow up to address customer needs and resolve their problems/issues. Ensure the proper resources from within the organization are involved with the customer and introduce new products through the other core business groups where appropriate. Develop and oversee customer service plans for each client and understand the needs of the customer. Responsible for securing renewal information and preparation of renewal applications and submissions, brokers slips, quotation slips and or RFP's to go to market or to Marketing Department. Prepares Proposals for renewals and meets with client for renewal presentations. Encourage and motivate team members to achieve or exceed agency standards. Prepare customer renewal and new business strategy including proposals and presentations and ensure they agree with customer's requests/requirements. Leads and assists with the preparation and presentation of proposals and tenders to customers and Ministries. Promote teamwork and commitment to department/Firms goals. Follow Firms guidelines, policies and procedures. Remain current on industry trends and information, new product development, legislation, coverages and technology. Proper assessment and rating of risks offered to the company. (All lines of General Insurance.) Ensuring that the Company's underwriting guidelines are adhered to. Overseeing the accurate and timely preparation of policy documents for clients, brokers and agents. Ensuring that policies provided and risks written, as well as reinsurance arrangements are within the underwriting guidelines of the Company Handling quotation requests from Brokers, Clients and Financial Advisors in a timely and efficient manner. Reviewing quotations done by other Team Members. Preparation and entering of provisional renewals and ensuring that the Underwriting Assistant completes their quota of provisional renewals. Ensuring that all receipted payments as well as Broker accounts are processed on a timely basis. Gather and assess background information, including reports and records from specialists where appropriate, in order to effectively assess the risk involved; Decide whether the risk should be shared with a reinsurer. Liaise with specialists, such as surveyors, for risk assessment, and develop good working relationships with large professional firms. Negotiate terms with policyholders or their brokers and draw up contracts. Ensure that premiums are competitive and that accounts remain profitable. Keep detailed and accurate records of policies underwritten and decisions made. Play a major role in tenders QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five (5) CSEC/O'level subjects includingMathematics and English. Two (2) CAPE/A'level subjects. Diploma or Degree in a related field would be an asset. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Preferably Five (5) years in a similar position or in an underwriting environment, preferably General Insurance and Life Insurance. The candidate must have high problem analysis and decision making abilities. They must have the ability to deal with complexity and to multitask. The candidate must have knowledge of the occupation or field of work and more specifically, expertise in the technical aspects of the job. SKILLS Analytical Skills: Underwriters look at many factors and information to solve issues and problems. Decision Making Skills: Underwriters must decide the cost and benefits of whether or not to recommend insurance coverage. Attention to Detail: Every detail in an insurance policy can affect the decision to offer coverage. Missing one might cost the company money. Interpersonal Skills: Underwriters will talk with insurance agents on a daily basis. Good communication skills are needed. Technical Skills: Underwriters will work with complex software daily. Being comfortable with computers and using mathematics is required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; Negotiation skills and the ability to influence others; Confident decision-making skills; Numeracy and statistical skills; Self-motivation; Sound judgement; The ability to work to tight deadlines; Team working skills but also a willingness to work using your own initiative; Excellent customer service skills.
