Finance Division

The Finance Division reports to the Chief Financial Officer and consists of some 3,000 employees worldwide. Finance protects the Morgan Stanley franchise by serving as guardian of the Firm's books and records, and by contributing to Firm wide risk management and risk reduction. This division maintains relationships with Morgan Stanley's various industry and government regulators, and also serves as the conduit of financial information to the outside investment community. Finance plays a critical role as advisor to Morgan Stanley's various businesses and its senior management team.

Tax Department

The Tax Department reports to the Chief Financial Officer and consists of some 200 employees worldwide. The Tax Department is responsible for global tax compliance, tax accounting, business unit tax advice and tax planning for the Firm.

Job description:

The professional will be providing Japanese tax compliance work including preparing tax provisions and tax returns by working closely with teams of Finance Division, and, involving in management of tax audits/inquiries from the Japanese tax authorities for the Morgan Stanley group of companies in Japan. The professional will also help business unit supports for the investment banking, global capital markets, institutional equities, fixed income, and investment management businesses. The role will involve extensive communication within the Firm's Asia and global tax department, finance division, business units, and other non-tax stakeholders.

Core responsibilities:

  • Preparations of Japanese tax provisions and tax returns for Morgan Stanley group and coordination with external auditors with respect to tax provision analysis and disclosures.
  • Work closely with various teams across the Finance division
  • Manage tax audits/inquiries from the Japanese tax authority
  • Supports for various business units on tax implications of Japan related activities, assist in structuring of transactions and businesses.
  • Supports for design, development and implementation of tax and capital planning in Japan in coordination with the US, Asia Pacific, and other regions.
  • Actively identify and manage tax risks for the firm
  • Maintain work relationship with external tax advisors including big 4 accounting firms and law firms.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills required:

  • Japanese CPA or Certified Tax Accountant is preferable.
  • Bachelors or master's degree in tax, accounting, or law.
  • Thorough knowledge of Japanese tax rules, research skills, and planning for a multinational firm preferably with knowledge of financial products and investment banking industry.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills, able to simplify and communicate complex business information.
  • Teamwork and collaborate with colleagues across jurisdictions.
  • Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership/responsibility and ability to manage projects through completion.
  • Resilience, multi-tasking capability and ability to work under stressful situation.
  • Open minded, receptive to new ideas such as technology innovation, and not afraid of challenging status quo.
  • 3 or more years of Japanese tax experience in a public accounting firm, law firm or corporate environment.
