The Senior Underwriter position is within the Corporate Client Banking's South Diversified portfolio, which includes clients in a wide variety of industries. Typical banking products utilized by these clients include syndicated credit, foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives, treasury management services, public and private debt and equity advisory and other investment-banking services.

The Senior Underwriter is the primary credit contact for a group of corporate banking customers. He or she works in partnership with banking, syndications, and product partners to analyze, structure, risk rate, document and approve credit exposures resulting from loans and other commercial banking products. Key portfolio management responsibilities include assessing the risk profile of the client and developing and maintaining a clear and forward-looking view of the client and the industry. Analysis is presented in the form of a written document and reviewed by the Senior Credit Executive for approval. On transactions, the Underwriter works in partnership with our banking, syndications and various product partners to analyze, structure, risk rate, document and approve credit exposures resulting from loans and other bank products. A successful Senior Underwriter is a valued member of the deal team and maintains a broad and deep understanding of the business, financial and competitive risks associated with the clients in their assigned portfolio.

The clients in this portfolio are headquartered across the Southern United States. The position will be based in Dallas, TX, Houston, TX, or Atlanta, GA. Occasional travel will be required.

Responsibilities:

Risk Assessment:
  • Identify the key risks related to a specific transaction
  • Develop a well-informed and forward-looking view of the business, financial and competitive risks associated with a company and sector
  • Lead or participate in customer due diligence sessions with the clients Treasurer and/or CFO
  • Attend meetings with the client and other lenders to pitch or launch a new deal
  • Use an internally customized version of Microsoft Excel to create financial models that include a full income statement, cash flow and balance sheet reflecting your assumptions about the future performance of the company and industry

Manage Credit Approval Process:
  • Ensure all credit exposures and loan amendments are reviewed and approved by a manager with the appropriate approval authority
  • Prepare written credit analysis on the transactions and present recommendations to the Senior Credit Executive.
  • Collaborate with deal team members to develop a credit/capital structure appropriate for the risk profile of the deal. Analyze and negotiate loan covenants and other key loan terms with the customer as part of the deal team.
  • Review and negotiate loan documentation with the client and counsel to ensure terms are appropriate.
  • Work with product partners to manage credit limits associated with a wide variety of treasury and derivatives products for clients

On-going Portfolio Management.
  • Continuously monitor the credit quality of each customer in your assigned portfolio.
  • Ensure risk ratings are accurate and are based on a forward-looking view of the customer.
  • Identify deteriorating credits and take appropriate action to mitigate risk to the Bank
  • Prepare and present to the Senior Credit Executive a written review of the financial performance, outlook and risk rating of each client on an annual basis
  • Prepare and present to management on a quarterly basis a written update on troubled or riskier clients
  • Work with external and internal auditors to validate credit quality and integrity of the credit process on an annual basis.
  • Work closely with Credit Support Specialist and other staff to ensure accuracy of credit system data
  • Minimum of 5 years of corporate banking credit, lending, documentation, and transaction experience.
  • BA/BAA degree required, MBA is a plus
  • Completion of a major corporate bank credit training program or equivalent experience
  • Academic training in the principals of accounting, finance and macro economics
  • Knowledge of JPMC or similar bank credit policies is a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Capability to work effectively as part of the deal team and interact with clients, bankers, product partners and senior management.
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications
