£80,000 - £100,000 p.a (plus Discretionary Bonus + Benefits)

Our client is an independant trader of physical products. After a period of success, the business is looking to appoint a newly formed position of Financial Controller.

Motivated to appoint the perfect candidate, the client will consider qualified accountants who have 4-5 years recent PQE in a physical oil trading environment and are ready to progress their career.

Due to the current organogram of the wider business, this position offers a potential route to a CFO position.

General responsibilities:

The Financial Controller is responsible for the organisation, preparation and co-ordination of all financial reporting for the group companies (excluding Australia). Focus will be on the three operating companies in the UK, US and Singapore. The Financial Controller is required to continuously consider ways to work more efficiently in order to improve quality, save time and money.


  • Contributes to policy development in the area of financial controlling. Involved in the customizing of policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Defines, coordinates and executes the annual planning process.
  • Monitors capital employed and return on capital employed. Develop reporting metrics to the shareholder.

Reporting, Forecasting, Budgeting:
  • Responsible for the preparation of the quarterly and annual management reports, including actual vs budget comparisons and variance analysis.
  • Responsible for the identification and the documentation of all non-routine transactions.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the annual, audited financial statements.
  • Participate in the organisation and co-ordination of the external audit process and associated liaison with auditors and legal counsel.
  • Preparation of the annual overheads budget.
  • Research and resolution of IFRS accounting issues.
  • Staying current with IFRS developments and requirements.

Performance management:
  • Coordinates and performs relevant periodic reporting in a complete, timely and comprehensive way. Automation of existing reports.
  • Designs, implements and produces effective performance management reports. Provides financial analysis, interpretation of variances from budgets and standards, and advice to management.
  • Assists in implementation of profitability reporting by trader.

Internal control:
  • Prevents inaccuracies in financial statements by setting up internal control systems and adopting proper policies for financial reporting all entities.
  • Reviews financial data periodically to ensure fairness and completeness of the data.

  • Assists in special projects whenever requested. Participates in the optimization and harmonization of controlling relevant IT-systems.
  • Reviews, and improves, integration of trading and general ledger systems.
  • Participates in implementation of A/P scanning system.
  • Ensures compliance with issued controlling guidelines and standards.

Education and Expertise:
  • University degree.
  • Accounting qualification and a minimum 5 years PQE.
  • Thorough knowledge of IFRS.
  • Thorough knowledge of a trading environment (paper and physical) preferably in the oil sector.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced user of Excel. Knowledge of SUN accounting.
