JOB OPPORTUNITY Assistant Legal Officer/Assistant Legal Claims Administrator Position Summary: The Assistant Legal Officer/Assistant Legal Claims Administrator provides direct support to the Legal Officer/ Legal Claims Administrator, ensures that legal claims are appropriately set up for review and provide superior customer service to internal and external customers. All activities must conform to organizational guidelines and standards and with all legal, statutory, regulatory and treaty requirements. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Prepares all legal documents and maintains/updates legal records for proper record keeping/ management to facilitate easy retrieval and accuracy of payments; Provides well-researched and cogent opinions to inform sound decision-making; Draft opinions/legal letters and correspondences for review by the Legal Officer/ Legal Claims Administrator; Conducts research to support or challenge relevant matters; Maintains hard copy and electronic filing systems to facilitate easy retrieval and proper record keeping, in keeping with the company's standards; Responsible for ensuring that all legal matters are handled expeditiously whether internally or external by Legal Counsel; Provides to the Legal Officer/ Legal Claims Administrator recommendations for improvement in claims settlement, underwriting, and operational efficiencies; Attends court when required/necessary; Performs any other related duties as assigned by Legal Officer/ Legal Claims Administrator to ensure smooth running of the Legal Department's operations within established deadlines. Assists the Legal Officer/ Legal Claims Administrator in negotiations and settlements of matters in the company's best interest, in conjunction with the; Assists the Legal Officer/ Legal Claims Administrator to ensure corporate responsibility to comply with all laws are upheld; Liaises with external regulators, advisors, Attorneys-at-Law, etc. in accordance with high standards of professionalism to uphold the company's image and reputation; Assists the Legal Officer/ Legal Claims Administrator with legal subrogation and recovery matters expeditiously according to company's guidelines; Responsible for receiving, actioning and filing of legal correspondence within Legal Department; Education & Experience Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Law (LLB) and a Legal Education Certificate (LEC) (or equivalent qualification such as Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Vocational Course (BVC)/Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) Admission to practice law in Trinidad and Tobago Two (2) years as a practicing Attorney-at-Law Considerable knowledge in civil procedure Two (2) years' experience in a legal/similar corporate environment with specific experience in insurance claims and defence Knowledge in Corporate Law, as well as working knowledge of relevant legal and regulatory requirements both locally and regionally Qualifications in General Insurance and mediation will be an asset.
