Job Description
General Accountability:
Asia Taxation is the trusted internal tax advisor and a key business partner in providing tax support to Manulife operations across Asia.
Reporting to Head of Tax - Asia, this new role will have the responsibility for a range of tax support, for the operations across Asia, in particular, in areas such as tax advisory, tax compliance, tax planning, tax accounting and risk management.
It is anticipated that this role will work closely with Asia Regional Finance staff, local business unit's Tax/Finance staff and Group Tax staff (based in Toronto) in implementing global tax strategy and best practices across Asia.
This role is a designated change agent and is accountable for conducting strategic and ad hoc controls and processes analysis.

Responsibilities:
-Develop an in depth understanding of the tax systems of the jurisdictions in which Manulife operates in Asia.
-Liaise with Manulife operations across Asia to ensure accuracy and timeliness of tax compliance, through regular review of relevant tax laws and with close co-ordination with local business unit's Tax/Finance staff and external advisors.
-Assist with evaluation of tax effectiveness of each of the Manulife Asia operations and develop recommendations to improve respective after tax results (legally minimizing tax liabilities through informed application of tax laws and regulations).
-Assist with financial reporting and tax accounting obligations. As and when required, make enhancements to the tax provisioning & analysis processes across Asia.
-Co-ordinate and work with local business unit's Tax/Finance staff in handling tax queries and support tax audits.
-Provide tax support to local business operations and representative offices across Asia as and when required (covering all tax types).
-As and when required, co-ordinate tax driven business initiatives locally or regionally.
-Provide tax support for various special projects, transformational initiatives and one-off transactions as and when required.
-Assist with the management of tax risk across Asia region including implementation and enforcement of company tax risk policy.
-Work cooperatively with all local business units and develop productive working relationships.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:
-University Accounting Degree with a recognized accounting designation.
-Minimum 7 years of tax experience with initial years at a Big 4. Financial services industry tax experience is preferred but not necessary.
-Technically strong with solid knowledge and experience in HK corporate tax.
-Knowledge of international tax laws and regulations with exposure to Asian tax jurisdictions.
-Prior experience in tax strategy implementation, planning support and project management would be advantageous.
-Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
-Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
-Attention to detail and well organized in attending to multiple priorities and time pressures.
-Strong business maturity and partnership skills.
-Independent and able to work well with minimal supervision.
-Motivated, proactive mindset which constantly seek new challenges/opportunities to refine existing processes and methodologies.
-Strong team player.
-Achievement oriented.
-Global mindset (skilled at managing inter-cultural and global relationships, flexibility to accommodate global project schedules, which may include off-hours conference call and business travel).

-Managing various competing requests/priorities at the same time.
-Delivering on one off or special projects with tight timelines in addition to normal 'day-to-day' work. Must be able to prioritize and multitask.
-Work with individuals based in different geographic locations and cultural backgrounds. Must be able to work effectively and influence others from a distance.
-Must be flexible and adaptable when dealing with change.
-Understand the business & strategy and understand how initiatives / technology can "enable" it.
