Essex County Council (ECC) is one of the largest, most reputable local authorities in the UK. Not only is it one of the largest, but it is one of the most dynamic, with a strong reputation for innovation and is a £2 billion organisation positively embracing change. By 2020, given Local Government reforms, we aim to be both self-financing and self-sufficient. It’s a significant change and a huge challenge. We’re committed to becoming a place where individuals, partners and communities feel proud to play their role and genuinely want to belong. In turn we offer a great central location which is easily accessible to all road and rail links plus we’re immensely proud of our flexible working options. We don’t just want to make Essex County Council the best it can be, we are passionate about better lives for people in Essex.

The opportunity

This role is a unique opportunity to participate in making a difference, challenging the way we think and helping to shape the future of finance within ECC. As an innovative financial expert and strategic leader, you will be delivering support and guidance to all levels of management and politicians, enabling change across a range of complex projects. You will be able to use your depth of knowledge, passion and understanding to influence key stakeholders and drive efficiency and cost improvements, while providing effective long term strategic advice and direction. About you

You will be CCAB qualified with a minimum of two years post qualification experience and evidence of your continuing professional development. You will have experience of financial management in a large, complex organisation, ideally the public sector, and provide great advice to use as a platform for influence and change.
We want people who are connected and networked – who are curious to find new approaches and bring innovation to their service in the pursuit of better value and outcomes.
This is not a job where you will spend long hours sat in front of a spreadsheet. Yes, you need to be an accomplished, credible finance professional but you also need to be equally adept at forging strong relationships and have the confidence to step beyond the accountant’s traditional boundaries. You will have the confidence to challenge conventional thinking where appropriate and back up your arguments with strong rationale.
You will be working at the heart of major programmes and projects at different points in their lifecycles and in very different areas so need to comfortable switching between projects at short notice and comfortable with a degree of ambiguity at times.
You need to have an eye for a good opportunity and the ability to persuade others to explore the opportunities you identify. You will thrive on the pressure of commercial negotiations and have a track record of delivering exceptional deals to the public.
You will also be expected to engage in broad strategic discussions (beyond just the financials) and positively influence senior decision makers and politicians both within ECC and in other organisations.
We are looking for people with the ability to manage and prioritise their own workloads and diaries, ensuring they are where they need to be, when they need to be, with minimal supervision. In return Essex County Council is committed to ensuring flexible working options across their business units and as a result you will not be expected to work from the office five days a week.
