As part of the Department for Education, you'll be helping to make a tangible difference to the lives of thousands of children and young people. And you'll be entitled to benefits like the excellent Civil Service pension scheme, flexi-time and generous leave.

The role

Working in a fast-moving, challenging yet supportive environment, you'll take away transferable leadership skills and experience that will be invaluable for your career.

The role calls for a blend of technical accounting and soft skills. You'll own a portfolio of tasks, such as supporting accounts production and audit; commissioning valuations; or designing data collection processes from academies. You'll lead on complex areas of financial reporting, delivering high quality work to often demanding timescales, and advising on day-to-day technical issues.

Collaboration will be vital. You'll guide and manage junior colleagues (from EAs to HEOs). You'll liaise with stakeholders to improve key financial reporting processes such as online data collection. You'll be part of an ambitious programme of change in the team, supporting work to bring a number of services in-house from suppliers and to automate the way we collect data from academies. More broadly, you'll build strong links across the Department, and advise internal stakeholders and academies, ensuring data received is robust and accurate.

Requirements

A proven leader, with a track record of effective professional decision-making, you'll have delivered in a fast-paced, pressured environment.

As well as having excellent technical accounting knowledge, you'll be a strong communicator, leader, and collaborator. And ideally, you'll also have experience of managing external audits, financial systems and statutory accounts. You'll also be a qualified (CCAB) accountant.
