SUMMARY: Bering Straits is seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist. Depending on experience the successful candidate will be placed at the appropriate level designation, I or II. The position of Payroll Specialist reports to the Payroll Manager. The function of the Payroll Specialist includes preparing, processing and reconciling payrolls for employees in multiple states and multi-company environment. Tasks are generally routine and require little deviation from the established procedures. The Payroll Specialist may also be responsible for periodic and quarterly tax payments and filings. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Enter and review bi-weekly and semi-monthly time sheets for union, SCA, Non-exempt and Exempt employees Under general supervision this position is responsible for full payroll process of multi-state employee including auditing and processing incoming payroll data as well as assisting departments with applicable forms and processes Responsible for processing payroll from start to finish often against tight deadlines. Calculation of exemption items such as bonus, garnishments and terminations Responsible for compiling, copying and insuring all filing and payroll reports are file accurately and timely Review and updates employee leave records Perform tasks to establish and maintain employee/payroll records Responsible for compiling, entering, scanning and emailing all Davis Bacon certified reports for the companies they are assigned (Payroll Specialist II) Accurate review, setup and processing of court ordered involuntary deductions including responding to or communicating with agencies regarding orders (Payroll Specialist II) Maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population Other related duties as required and assigned within the Payroll Department. QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION High school diploma or GED High school diploma or equivalent. At least one (1) years payroll work experience One to two years of progressively complex Payroll processing required. (Payroll Specialist II) Comprehensive knowledge of how payroll taxes and deductions are computed (Payroll Specialist II) Ability to meet daily & weekly deadlines. Ability to balance multiple competing priorities and deadlines. Good organizational and time management skills. Good interpersonal skills and able to work in a team environment. Dependable and punctual. Must be able to operate office machines, including a computer, copier, fax and 10-key by touch as well as make arithmetic calculations. Preferred: Previous experience processing payroll in a multi company environment. CostPoint experience. Deltek Time & Expense experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology. Managing one's own time and coordinating time with others. The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Using computers and computer system software, enter data, or process information. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires the ability to operate conventional office equipment such as laptop or desktop computers, fax, phone, copiers, printers, filing cabinets and systems, and binding machines. Requires ability to see, hear, and verbally communicate with co-workers and clients. Essential and marginal functions may require frequent sitting, walking or occasional standing, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, of items weighing as much at 25 pounds; near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work described herein is primarily a modern office setting. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS As a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base.
