Vacancy:Finance Director, Life Science Technologies
Location: Royston or London Paddington, UK
The Life Science Technologies (LST) business has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Finance Director to join its global leadership team. As part of Johnson Matthey’s New Markets Sector, LST, is well placed for strong growth in an attractive market, with a focus on the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine chemical sectors and its products which include homogeneous, heterogeneous and enzymatic catalysts.
This role will have finance responsibility for LST finance worldwide, providing functional leadership, support and challenge to the business and the financial controllers and their teams at LST sites internationally; being the finance business partner to the LST Managing Director and the rest of the LST Management Team; and representing LST Finance with the Sector and with Group.
Key responsibilities
- Work effectively across all aspects of the LST business, both in terms of functions (e.g. commercial, R&D, manufacturing) and with the finance teams at the international sites.
- Establish a robust control environment across LST and continually monitor and assess effectiveness, and the suitability of the controls for the risk environment. Decisively make changes in a timely manner to maintain that environment.
- Ensure the risk environment is correctly assessed and controls are in place to mitigate the risk to an acceptable level whilst at the same time facilitating growth. Define, implement and maintain a risk control environment to manage risk to an acceptable level. Own and be accountable for own areas of control framework and holds others to account for theirs. Responsible, along with the rest of the management team, for setting the risk appetite in line with Group Policy, and escalate critical risks.
- Accountable for the application of appropriate governance over financial reporting to ensure compliance. Produce accurate and timely financial statements in an efficient manner. Ensure that the LST balance sheets are actively reviewed and monitored.
- Understand the JM strategy and how this translates into the LST strategy. Contribute to LST Strategy formulation and manage the LST budget process, ensuring resources are deployed accordingly in order to execute. Understand how business performance drives shareholder value and take this into consideration during decision making and communication.
- Provide relevant and timely management reporting to give insight on business performance and recommend actions to deliver business benefits. Use financial analysis to drive business performance, convince and influence senior stakeholders.
- Maximise value and efficiency through a detailed understanding of business processes. Use this understanding to provide and evaluate quality data, and make decisions / help leaders to improve business performance. Critically challenge business case assumptions and write a compelling business case based on value drivers such as cash flow, ROIC, working capital, EPS, operating profit etc. Understand how to drive working capital out of the business and what the key levers are.
- Ensure that the precious metal risk environment, both financial and physical, is managed through effective controls. Understand precious metal impacts on working capital and cashflow to provide insight into business performance and forecasts.
- Lead and coordinate the half-year and year-end processes to include financial accounting and tax packs, plus filings assurances.
- Understand the statutory requirements associated with their business, ensuring that the right skills and capabilities are in place to comply with obligations, consulting with appropriate subject matter experts as appropriate to manage these. Ensure compliance with Company tax policies and deploys across areas of responsibility.
- Understand the importance of cash management and credit risk management, and ensure compliance with Company treasury policies.
- Act as the primary point of contact for LST with Group Finance, Treasury, Tax, Assurance & Risk and external auditors and tax authorities for all finance, accounting, tax and treasury matters.
- Lead, develop and coach the finance team in respective business units across LST finance, developing capability and ensuring good talent management and succession planning.
- Proactively drive and support change and improvements across the organisation.
Are you the ideal candidate?
- ACA/ACCA/CIMA accounting qualification or equivalent.
- Relevant experience in a Finance Director role within a manufacturing or similar business, with science, technology or engineering industry experience also desirable.
- Strong leadership, communication and influencing skills, with experience of influencing internationally across different cultures and with colleagues who work in a matrix outside of direct reporting lines.
- Proven track record in driving business performance and improving / maintaining strong control environments, systems and processes in complex businesses.
- Role will involve significant amount of travel, mainly to LST locations internationally.
