Setting up an Assurance and Risk function within a charity, basing the set up in current risk and internal audit procedures.

Client Details

We are currently working on an exclusive basis with a leading UK based charity. They have been working and campaigning since 1911 and went through a re-brand in 2011 to bring it into the 21st Century. They are the largest charity in their field in the UK.

Their work includes providing high-quality support and care for the individuals they support. They fund research to find a cure for the condition, and encourage the take-up of new technology and medical treatments to help manage the condition. As an organisation they also campaign for equality, so the people we support can make the same life choices as everyone else.

Description

Reporting to the Executive Director of Corporate Resources, this is a high profile role which works closely with the Senior Managers and Trustees.

The Head of Assurance is accountable for adding strategic, operational and commercial value to our client by:

  • Develop and leading an internal audit programme across the charity to assess the management and control of risk.
  • Provide an effective risk management function in relation to the charity's activities including managing the Strategic Risk Register; chairing Risk Committee; ensuring business continuity plans are in place and tested.



  • Reporting into the Audit Committee on the whole range of assurance activities that take place within the charity, and maintain an independent reporting line to the Chair.
  • Auditing/ assuring the quality of work undertaken by the various teams within the Charity and implementing mitigation plans to resolve risks/ issues and areas of weak performance
  • Operating an enterprise risk management model to ensure the charity is effectively managing its strategic and operational risks across its multiple functions
  • managing investigations into serious complaints, whistleblowing and alleged frauds


  • Supporting the Corporate Secretary in managing the charity's governance framework (including regulatory reporting)


  • Line manage, mentor and develop an Internal Audit and Risk Manager, and effectively manage the team's budget

  • Ensuring Trustees and Senior Management understand the charity's risks and the effectiveness of control mechanisms, and manage communications to Trustees and Senior Management on risk and control issues.

  • Act as a representative on a range of organization wide groups and externally as required at groups/ events

Profile

Essential:

  • Proven experience in risk management, compliance systems and extensive knowledge of legal and regulatory guidance/frameworks
  • Demonstrable background of leading audit (or internal audit) and risk management practices
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate excellence in others, to influence colleagues successfully and to build bridges between different stakeholders.
  • Ability to convert complex and technical information into simple and user-friendly guidance.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Innovative and change oriented in developing work practices and risk strategy circumstances
  • Recent background in Internal/audit/risk (all three ideally)

Ideal:

  • Practical experience of fraud investigations.
  • Previously set up a function with risk or internal audit or assurance
  • Experience of complaint/ whistleblowing management
  • Previous line management experience
  • Previous experience of implementing business continuity disaster recovery plans in a large or complex organisation
  • ACA/ACCA/CIA/CIPFA/ IIA qualified or International Certificate/ Diploma in Enterprise Risk Management
  • Accredited Counter Fraud Specialist or equivalent
