Job description

Manager – Private Client (Tax Investigations)

Why KPMG?

At KPMG, our values define who we are and the way we do business. As a leading professional services firm, we know that our strength and capability come from our people – their different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. From our inclusive leadership strategy to our diversity and inclusion targets – we’re making bold changes to who we are and what we do. Be part of it.

We are looking to recruit a Tax Investigations Manager to join our national team. The role will involve working closely in a strong team on a range of clients and exciting projects, collaborating with different teams and locations across the firm.

The successful candidate will have experience of managing HMRC enquiries and investigations and assisting clients with voluntary disclosures.

Roles and Responsibility

As a manager, you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of clients and for the timely delivery of services. You will also support partners, senior managers and other colleagues in the Family Office and Private Client (FOPC) team with tax enquiries / investigations and voluntary disclosures to ensure a satisfactory settlement is negotiated between the client and HM Revenue & Customs.

  • You will be required to provide advice on an ad hoc basis to the FOPC team and other tax teams on a range of issues covering HMRC enquiries and voluntary disclosures.
  • You will be expected to contribute toward marketing and business development initiatives and build sustainable internal and external client relationships.
  • You will oversee the day to day running of the investigation or disclosure for a portfolio of clients.
  • You will prepare investigation and disclosure letters/reports, including reviewing the computational aspects of the report, for submission to the HMRC, working directly to a partner or senior manager and delegating appropriate tasks to more junior staff.
  • You will liaise directly with clients and other parties to ensure work is done and produced according to the desired timescales.  You will take part in the negotiation of any settlement together with a partner or other senior member of the team.
  • You will manage the billing and collection in respect of each client in your portfolio.  You will identify and recognise business and sales opportunities and inform the relevant director or senior manager as appropriate.

What we require from you:

  • Extensive experience of tax enquiries, investigations, and voluntary disclosures.
  • Ideally this will include experience of offshore disclosures, enquiries into international matters (e.g. domicile) and Fraud Investigation cases (e.g. COP9)
  • Deep knowledge on all aspects of managing a tax enquiry or disclosure and HMRC procedures (e.g. information powers, discovery, assessments, penalties)
  • Excellent client service skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build a network of contacts internally and externally.
  • The desire to take ownership of your career and development.
  • CTA/ACA/ACCA qualified or relevant work experience (eg trained at HMRC)
