As part of the Global Fund Services team, the Fund Governance Solutions team supports Northern Trusts’ Fund Administration clients in meeting Regulatory, Compliance ,and Distribution needs for their US-domiciled fund vehicles. The Consultant role will focus on Distribution Payment Support for Mutual Funds.


The Consultant role will focus on Distribution support related to Intermediary relationships, and will actively participate in Intermediary Oversight for one or more fund complexes, including Northern’s proprietary mutual fund complexes. The candidate will work with Clients, Service Providers, and internal Northern Trust partner teams on both day to day deliverables, and on project work related to new or changing regulations.


  • Process 12b-1 and Intermediary servicing fees payments, including reconciliation of incoming invoices, the managing of fee allocations and enacting payment to the intermediaries.
  • Review all new and amended Intermediary Agreements for fee terms.
  • Provide support for Intermediary Onboarding.
  • Assist with periodic testing of custom controls and related reporting.
  • Support Blue Sky reporting, including interaction with outsourced provider, payment of invoices, managing fund changes related to blue sky registration, and acting as a liaison between clients and the Blue Sky service provider.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation on custom processes and controls.
  • Develop and amend internal processes and procedure documents.
  • Cultivate and maintain working relationships with other NT functional teams to ensure high quality delivery of services to the client and the client’s investors.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant industry practices, regulations, and company processes.
  • Demonstrate proactive problem solving skills.

The ideal candidate will be expected to:

  • have a working knowledge of how mutual funds are sold in the marketplace, the operational interactions between a financial services intermediary and the funds’ transfer agent.
  • develop and / or maintain knowledge of processes, data and file flows relevant to the industry, including National Securities Clearing Corp (NSCC) processing, Blue Sky reporting and related regulations.
  • develop and / or maintain a working knowledge of the operating environment unique to NTC as an intermediary for Northern’s proprietary mutual funds.

The ideal candidate will be required to:

  • have experience in the financial services industry, with a preference for directly relevant experience.
  • have strong written and verbal communication skills; analytical and problem-solving skills; and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced, time sensitive environment.
  • have the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative group.
  • stay abreast of regulatory developments and other trends impacting mutual funds distribution.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • a general understanding of mutual funds regulatory requirements.
  • flexibility, willingness to learn, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • strong attention to detail.
  • a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience.
  • direct experience with mutual funds operations.
