About the role
If you are one of those people who like to think they are “not a standard accountant”, this role may be for you. Whilst technical skills are essential, what is more important in this role is an ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders, supporting them to deliver their own challenging objectives.

This role is a senior advisor to some of the most high-profile stakeholders at the GLA. The budget quantum is not as large as in some other roles, but this is made up for by the range of activities being covered. This FBP role will support all the back-office functions at the GLA, but also works to support the Mayor’s Office and the Assembly in managing their own day to day budgets. So, attention to detail is of the utmost importance and the ability to work with senior stakeholders is essential.

About the team
The Financial Services Team has been on a transformational change journey over the last few years, striving to deliver excellent service to support the GLA’s delivery across London. We have now embedded our Finance Business Partner model and are working on a continuous improvement programme to ensure our customers across the GLA receive even better services from us. There is still a lot to do, but we are confident in our ambition to continue to deliver improvement across the GLA’s finance landscape.

The Financial Services team is split into three sub-teams: Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Finance Business Partnering. All three provide essential support to each other, and we also work closely with our colleagues in the Group Finance & Performance team and the Treasury team.

What your day will look like

No two days are the same – but will include:

  • Working with senior stakeholders to ensure that budgets are delivered and budget monitoring processes are followed.
  • Ensuring that forecasts are robust.
  • Writing financial commentary on performance and analysis on decisions.
  • Representing stakeholders at performance discussions.
  • Supporting the delivery of some large scale change programmes, such as the transfer of service to shared services arrangements.
  • Influence and challenge strategic decisions to ensure that outcomes represent good value for money.
  • Advise on appropriate accounting treatment and interpretation of governance frameworks.
  • Skills, knowledge and experience.

To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Full and current CCAB or equivalent qualification (e.g., CIPFA, CIMA, ACCA, etc.).
  • Experience of working with ERP finance systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
  • Experience of delivering succinct and accessible financial commentary.
  • Experience of working in the finance function of a large and complex organization.
  • Experience of supporting senior stakeholders in delivering their own objectives.
