The Role

Purpose

The T&S Subject Matter Expert (SME) functions as the conduit for the Credit Assessment process and provides functional guidance to the global T&S Underwriting team. This role is envisioned to sustainably support the retention and development of the core Underwriting competences and will focus primarily on the Gas and Power / Renewable Energy Solutions (RES) businesses. The role is expected to work closely with the Operations and Excellence teams ensuring alignment in application of methodologies, standards and project deployments. The SME will also perform operational responsibilities associated with portfolio reviews and support credit approvals. The global T&S team is split across multiple geographies with 6 FTEs portfolio managers/analysts in London, Houston, Singapore and ~90 FTEs managers and staff in Manila.

Core Accountabilities

Operational Excellence

  • Develop methodologies/guiding principles for the new and emerging RES businesses
  • Perform medium-risk portfolio, sector and sovereign reviews delivered to support portfolio and management decisions
  • Act as the integration point between portfolio reviews and counterparty assessments through decisions/actions emanating from Credit Committees
  • Act as level 3 MOA authority holder
  • Identify and share best practices; maintain relationship with third parties to keep updated on industry methodology updates. Best practices to be embedded in the learning programs
  • Improve operational excellence by driving continuous Improvement in the UW process

Capability Development

  • Develop standardised learning programs and conducting trainings to reskill, upskill and deepen functional expertise. This includes planning, delivery and facilitation of trainings across the Underwriting function;
  • Understand business priorities and ensure that learning activity is aligned with the business strategy;
  • Collaborate with Underwriting leads in defining the appropriate training medium/methodology that fits with the teams’ learning needs and requirements;
  • Act as the point of consultation for technical underwriting content and address complex queries involving business models and scenarios;
  • Drive alignment and implementation of credit policies with support from T&S Policy & Governance and Process Excellence

Project Delivery and Continuous Improvement

  • Support delivery of key Underwriting projects (Credit Automation) providing functional expertise
  • Liaise with external agencies in the development/integration of credit models considering quantitative and qualitative methods

Dimensions

The Shell Trading Network/RES businesses are fast moving and growing. The business is becoming increasingly complex amidst a very dynamic macro-economic landscape impacted by the shifts in global supply and demand exacerbated by the pandemic and energy crisis. There is increased appetite to do business in riskier emerging markets and jurisdictions with adverse credit conditions.

Transactions being entered into are also of increasing number, complexity and tenor. The recent past has seen a strong rise in the number of non-standard transactions. Furthermore, asset-based trading strategies are also growing strongly, employing more working capital and introducing increased levels of risk and resource consumption.

The role will support the global Underwriting teams situated in Manila (Operations) and Houston, Singapore, London (hubs)

Special Challenges

  • This role creates the opportunity to define the Global Trading Credit Organisation particularly in a highly dynamic business environment where we look to continually innovate and define best credit solutions to support the dynamic and fast-paced Trading and Supply business.
  • Demonstrate a firm grasp of the key commercial considerations, as well as an ability to weigh up and decide on the risks.
  • Maintain the ability to respond immediately and decisively in the event of the "known unknowns" in the external environment. There will inevitably be peaks and troughs in the workload over the course of the year.
  • Maintain strong and long-term stakeholder relationships within and outside of Shell counterparties maintaining the right external image and engagements
  • Keep connected with the other teams within T&S Credit, and Commercial teams to establish understanding of emerging themes and challenges
  • Willingness to learn or currently have ability to navigate through various end user trading systems and external credit tools and systems

Experiences & Qualifications

  • Ideally, would have relevant finance experience (8-10 years) with specific focus in Credit or prior work experience in the corporate sector, especially within a Trading or Credit team. CPA or any equivalent license is a plus.
  • Highly developed analytical skills with perceptive and clear strategic abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivated, outcome driven and is able to exercise informal leadership and influence
  • Strong commercial understanding, especially the ability to balance speed, cost benefit and long-term relationship management.
  • Detail orientated and has passion for continued learning/instruction and is able to demonstrate ability to coach and educate team members
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and build trust with senior stakeholders and Business partners
  • The ability to work under pressure, working to tight deadlines and able to switch priorities as necessary
  • Experienced in working in a virtual environment. Affinity for change and the ability to work in ever evolving teams as well as through others.
  • Able to demonstrate key project management and digital skills– Agile thinking, Opportunity identification, Process analytics
