You will also need to bring professional strategic experience of IT, digital, cyber and information governance and compliance, to assist us in driving forward with improvements and modernisation of our systems and services. Being financially aware and commercially minded would also be helpful.

It will be your duty to ensure effective governance, consistent with the Nolan principles and NHS values, alongside assisting in developing a long-term vision and strategy for the Trust with the executive directors and Council of Governors.

Experience of working within the NHS is not essential.

Main duties of the job

Our Board of Directors is collectively responsible for our strategic direction, effective leadership in our day-to-day operations and performance, and ensuring the Trust is well-governed in all aspects of our activities. As a unitary Board, Non-Executive Directors and all Executive Directors have joint responsibility for every decision of the Board and share the same liability.

The Board operates with seven committees:
  • Audit Committee
  • Charitable Funds Committee
  • Finance and Digital Committee
  • People and Culture Committee
  • Performance and Estates Committee
  • Strategy and Transformation Committee
  • Quality Assurance Committee.
Our Non-Executive Directors play a vital role in challenging the Board in decision-making and on our Trust's strategy and is, therefore, a rewarding opportunity to add value to the Board through your experiences, perspective and strategic insights as well as your ability to seek assurance from, and hold to account, the executive team in a collaborative manner.

The time commitment is approximately 4 days per month and includes Board and committee meetings, Council of Governors Public meetings, Non-Executive Directors' meetings, attending relevant Trust activities and events, sharing specific advice on plans and projects, and preparation time for meetings.

Person specification

Experience
Essential criteria
  • Ability to work at Board level as an effective member.
  • Previous experience in information governance, particularly within the NHS
  • Previous legal, governance and compliance experience
  • Ability to represent the needs of the diverse communities we serve
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in a Non-Executive role
  • A recognised finance qualification or relevant finance experience
  • Previous commercial sector experience or commercial mindset and skills
