Department Profile

The Finance Division reports to the Chief Financial Officer and consists of some 3,000 employees worldwide. Finance protects the Morgan Stanley franchise by serving as guardian of the Firm's books and records, and by contributing to firm wide risk management and risk reduction. Finance plays a critical role as advisor to Morgan Stanley's various businesses and its senior management team.

Team Profile

The Finance Data Office (FDO) owns the Data Governance framework for the Finance Division. The FDO promotes best practices for data management with a focus on data quality while serving as Finance's representative to the Firm on data matters through:

  1. Data Governance — facilitating Finance-wide data governance processes through the Finance Data Governance Committee (DGC) including escalating and coordinating activities across the Firm
  2. Issue Management — managing, monitoring, and reporting on Finance data issues
  3. Strategic Data Sourcing — managing sourcing of data to the Finance Data Warehouse (FDW) from the Firm's data authorities and enabling the adoption of FDW data by Finance constituents
Role Description

The Firm is in the process of implementing a Global Data Policy, which establishes and communicates Firmwide principles and practices to effectively manage data, to assess the impact of data challenges, and to prioritize the remediation of issues related to data across the Firm. The specific principles enforce proper data ownership, warrants data to be consumed from designated data authorities, enhances the control environment, escalates and remediates issues, and ensures that data is being cataloged in the Firm-wide data catalog. Ideal candidate will have experience implementing a small team for a new function while receiving responsibilities transitioned from the US team.

This role effectively works with various levels of businesses and technology stakeholders across the Firm while overseeing the implemented team to ensure full compliance of the Global Data Policy principles. Additionally, this role maintains and validates the data cataloged in the Finance Glossary within the Firm-wide data catalog, and provides metrics and reporting for both Global Data Policy compliance and accuracy and completeness of the Firm-wide data catalog for various senior forums throughout the organization.

Qualifications - External

  • 12+ years of professional experience including management
  • Strong organization and process skills; attention to detail
  • Self-starter; good time management; team player
  • Experience with designing processes and incorporating strategic thinking
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical/logical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to interact with various levels throughout the organization across functions and business units adjusting details and messaging to audience and seniority
  • Exposure to data governance disciplines
  • Management experience and proven experience of hiring and building a team
  • Strong financial product knowledge is a plus
  • Experience with data quality management, financial services or capital markets data is a plus
  • Experience with regulatory reporting is a plus
