About the role

Balfour Beatty Investments has an exciting opportunity for a Company Accountant to join our Investments team to work in Newcastle.

Role Profile:

To provide the accounting function for concessions to meet concession, lender, shareholder and statutory reporting requirements.

What you'll be doing

As a Company Accountant, you will:

  • Produce monthly management accounts and provide commentary thereon (including variance analysis) to concession deadlines;
  • Prepare statutory accounts and act as first point of contact with auditors;
  • Prepare annual budgets and periodic updates to support 6-monthly updates for lenders;
  • Make payments to subcontractors and lenders to contractual timescales;
  • Liaise with lenders in respect of loan agreement financial administrations;
  • Prepare VAT and CIS returns;
  • In conjunction with the Finance Manager, maintain the Finance Policies and Procedures Manuals;
  • Produce cash flow forecasts, manage treasury deposits and control company bank balances;
  • Liaise with Finance Manager to determine technical accounting calculations as required (e.g. IFRIC 12 for PFI and similar concession arrangements);
  • Take ownership of all General Ledger accounts and ensure that invoices, payments, receipts and month-end journals are processed accurately and with required authorizations;
  • Ensure that the concessions' financial transactions are carried out in accordance with its contracts and accounting policies and standards and that reliable accounting records are maintained;
  • Produce Balance Sheet account reconciliations;
  • Liaise with internal audit function and resolve issues identified;
  • Prepare Corporation Tax quarterly payment calculations and provide information to tax advisers relating to annual computations and returns;
  • Complete any other additional duties such as the Head of Concession Finance, Finance Manager or Concession management team may reasonably require.

Who we're looking for

Personal Qualities & Experience

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent standard;
  • Qualified or nearly qualified accountant;
  • Good practical accountant;
  • Able to work with technical accounting concepts;
  • IT literate especially with Excel and Word;
  • Able to work and communicate effectively with colleagues at a range of levels;
  • Able to act on own initiative and prepared to ask for guidance;
  • Able to perform a number of different tasks and to prioritise own workload to ensure deadlines are met, whilst producing accurate work;
  • Quick to assimilate and work effectively with new information.

Desirable:

  • PFI experience;
  • Familiarity with SUN Accounts software.
