Role Summary

This is a Risk Management role within the growing second line of defense Risk Management team, that will play a key advisory role to the Northern Trust’s Capital Markets businesses by supporting first-lines of defense including the various business lines within Capital Markets and related support functions.

The Senior Risk Consultant will be responsible for providing independent Risk Management oversight and advisory to the Capital Markets business lines ranging from supporting with clients’ proposals review, due diligence, oversight over incidents/near misses, deep-dive/thematic reviews, advising on new/changes to products, processes etc.

Reporting to the APAC Capital Markets Business Unit Risk Manager, this role will work alongside line 2 risk SMEs (local, regional, and line 1 Capital Markets Risk and Resiliency partner) to support the businesses lines to identify, assess, mitigate and monitor risks and advocate for good risk management and strong risk culture.

What you will do

  • Support management in providing independent oversight and challenge over first line risk management.
  • Assist management on identification and management of key risks within the Capital Markets Business – notably Brokerage, Securities Financing, Transition Management and FX to form a comprehensive risk profile across NT’s Capital Markets Business.
  • Provide advice to the Capital Market Business on the application of various aspects of NT’s Risk Management Frameworks, whilst working collaboratively with other second line Risk and Compliance SMEs, to ensure the Risk Framework is appropriately embedded and understood by the Capital Markets Business.
  • Coordinate and manage the delivery of various risk reporting needs including quarterly risk report to NTSA Management Committee and Board, provide input into risk reporting for Capital Markets Business across local, APAC and global risk reporting.
  • Implementation and continuous improvement of NTSA Risk Management Framework
  • Provide support and advice to the Brokerage business in application of any ASIC specific requirements.
  • Review and oversight of incidents and near-misses.
  • Support management to identify and assess potential risks associated with strategic projects, new/tailored products and services.
  • Develop and perform deep-dive and thematic review programs that are risk-based to deliver valuable insights and drive process and control improvements.
  • Supports the Business in identifying emerging risks including reviewing and challenging development of mitigating strategies and controls.
  • Supports management to develop and support practices to improve Risk Management processes and activities.
  • Advocate for good Risk Management practices, delivering training and support for the Business.
  • Provide Risk Management support on request for proposals, client due diligence/presentations, compliance statements and ad-hoc client queries.

Contribution to the team

  • Interacts with partners within the Capital Markets business lines and support functions, regulators, and internal and external auditors on regulatory topics.
  • Assists management to work towards the Company’s strategic goals.

About You:

  • Proven professional experience as first line Risk or second line Risk including business partnering roles within a Trading / Capital Markets environment
  • Extensive knowledge of Capital Market products, operational processes and experience in managing associated end-to-end Risks
  • Experience in managing risks relating to foreign exchange, interest rate, equity, liquidity, and other operational processes
  • Good understanding of risk management framework, concepts and tools
  • Tertiary qualification in Business/Law/Risk or the related fields is preferred
  • Ability to connect and build productive relationships at all levels and communicate with influence at executive and senior level
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to with the ability to consult and influence Business leaders and work within a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical mind with the ability to provide insights to assist the stakeholders in making key decisions
  • Experience in leading/facilitating cross-functional meetings and workshops

Good to have skills (additional):

  • Working knowledge of obligations for the finance Industry, with a focus on ASIC and APRA
  • Exposure to first line/second line/operational roles in Asset Servicing /Fund Administration/Capital Markets/Cash Payments operations are highly regarded
