Our client is an exciting, family-owned SME based in Somerset which has a real focus on sustainability.

They are now looking to recruit a Financial Controller to maintain the company's finances and provide financial analysis and support to the directors.

Financial Controller - The role

As Financial Controller you will be an experienced hands-on qualified accountant.

Your key role will be managing the company's finances and improving the financial reporting processes. You will also have some responsibility for HR and insurance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Attend monthly meeting with directors and external accountants to discuss results;
  • Process monthly journals and prepare accounts to Trial Balance;
  • Perform monthly control account reconciliations;
  • Prepare prepayments and accruals schedules;
  • Manage Fixed Assets including compliance, depreciation and HP payments;
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns and liaison with HMRC;
  • Perform credit checks on new customers and recommend credit limits;
  • Oversee Sales Ledger;
  • Liaise with external accountants and prepare financial information to support the year end accounts and tax returns;
  • Manage monthly payroll and make payments;
  • Perform supplier statement reconciliations;
  • Manage insurance renewal process;
  • HR responsibilities including employee contracts;
  • Supply information for and submit ONS surveys;
  • Oversee and support the Finance Assistant;
  • Assist with ad hoc finance projects and reports;
  • Develop systems to improve reporting requirements.


The Successful Applicant

You will be a "hands-on", proactive Financial Controller who has worked at a similar level previously. Ideally you will have worked in family-owned businesses previously and have an interest in sustainability.

Requirements include:

  • ACCA/ACA/CIMA qualified;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Working knowledge of Sage 200 and/or Xero desirable;
  • Green energy experience desirable;
  • An inquiring analytical mind;
  • A can-do attitude and ability to work on your own initiative;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Planning and time management skills;
  • System evaluation /implementation experience valuable.
