The Assistant Financial Controller is a key role within the Sumo Group ("Group") finance team responsible for all aspect of operational finance including general ledger management and transaction processing, oversight of AP and AR, VAT, treasury processes and balance sheet controls. Reporting into the Senior Financial Controller, the role will also support the management and development of the operational finance team.

Sumo is a dynamic, growing business with multiple finance team members across the Group and as such the specific requirements of our team may change as the needs of the business changes. We also regularly assess the skills, experience and development needs of our team and may look to adjust or rotate responsibilities from time to time to reflect these.

Within this role you will:
    • Be responsible for key aspects of the month end cycle, managing the plan for delivery to deadlines within the operational finance team, posting journals, reviewing general ledger output and performing and reviewing key balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy of financial information.
    • Identify balance sheet risks and opportunities and report and escalate these where appropriate
    • Be the key point of contact for Central and Commercial finance teams ensuring all financial data accurately reflects the Group reporting structure
    • Be the key point of escalation for wider business stakeholders for operational finance queries including for AP, AR, expenses and treasury, ensuring finance processes and controls are robustly applied whilst maintaining high levels of service delivery to the business
    • Drive positive change, identify and deliver operating efficiencies in the way we work through programme of continuous improvement using systems and automation
    • Coach, mentor and develop the AP Supervisor and the wider operational finance team
    • Be responsible for daily treasury processes including review and reporting of cash, ensuring all Group accounts have appropriate cash balances and implementing intercompany transfers as needed
    • Oversee the AP team, ensuring all supplier invoices are processed and paid on a timely basis. Review and authorise weekly payment runs.
    • Review the 6-monthly payment practices report prepared by the AP supervisor and report on outputs and actions to the Senior Financial Controller and Group FC.
    • Prepare quarterly VAT returns for review by the Senior Financial Controller
    • Maintain general ledger structures and databases and be the key point of contact for the Group's GL system support partners
    • Support the Group's statutory audit, liaising with the external audit team and providing information and analysis
    • Support on the preparation of external financial statements and other external reporting
    • Manage the integration of new acquisitions into Group finance processes
    • Support the Senior Financial controller and Group FC with ad-hoc information and analysis as required


We need you to have:
    • A professional accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or similar) or be qualified by experience
    • Extensive experience working in a finance environment
    • Experience leading and managing teams
    • Strong presentation skills, both written and oral, ability to flex style depending on audience.
    • The ability to build relationships with key stakeholders and broader business stakeholders
    • An enthusiastic, team-based ethos. Ability to break down silos and collaborate across multiple team members, teams and parts of the Group.
    • The ability to prioritise in a dynamic business, be well organised, and able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines.
    • Show a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
    • Exceptional attention to detail.
    • A strong desire to implement change and best practice, with the confidence to question processes and recommend improvements.
    • Strong excel skills and the ability to analyse and manipulate data.
