Job description

Your opportunity
Deloitte Total Rewards and Benefits (DTRB), within the Tax & Legal Service Line is a multi-disciplinary group comprising over 200 professionals - actuaries, employee benefits specialists, accountants, investment professionals and administrators, led by five partners
.DTRB is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority ("FCA") and provides investment advice, actuarial services, employer covenant advisory services and outsourced pension administration services to trustees and corporate sponsors of pension schemes.We are a national practice with a large team in Belfast, together with teams in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow.

The employer covenant is the employer's legal obligation and financial ability to support its pension scheme obligations. Employer covenant advisory involves assessing the financial strength of businesses, both on an ongoing basis and in the context of corporate events and transactions. This is a challenging and fast-growing area, particularly due to new legislation and increased regulation. Employer covenant, together with funding and investments, forms part of the integrated risk management framework which pension trustees use to help ensure the financial security of member benefits.

Are you looking to return to the workplace after an extended career break?
For this role we can offer coaching and support designed for returners to refresh your knowledge and skills, and help your transition back into the workplace after a career break of 2 years or more. If this is relevant for you, just let your recruiter know when you make your application.

Your role
Deloitte Total Reward and Benefits is seeking a Consultant with a strong accounting analysis background to help support the growth of its employer covenant advisory business.

The role will require leveraging your accounting and business analysis experience to assess the financial strength of businesses and consider the business challenges faced due to defined benefit pension obligations.

No pensions or employer covenant experience is necessary, as the role will provide a great learning opportunity for the successful candidate to train and develop into a client advisory role.

You will be able to analyse income statements, cash flows and balance sheets to assess the current or future strength of businesses. This may include evaluating the impact of a M&A, restructuring or refinancing on a business' profitability and balance sheet strength. This will help determine the financial strength of the business and its support provided to its pension scheme (i.e. the employer covenant strength).

This is a great opportunity for a high calibre candidate to fast track their career prospects, progress into a manager role, widen their skillset and be part of Deloitte's ambitious growth plans for its pensions and covenant advisory business.

The role will involve working on some of the most complex transactions and challenging issues businesses and trustees face, and work alongside a range of Deloitte specialists in actuarial, tax, financial advisory and legal.

Typical work will include:
  • Being part of a growing multi-disciplinary team advising some of the biggest private equity firms, creditor groups and global companies on the impact of a transaction, restructuring or refinancing on the employer covenant provided to pension schemes;
  • Supporting wider Deloitte specialists/experts to assist in devising and advising on solutions to mitigate changes in the employer covenant support provided to pension schemes;
  • Supporting the management of a portfolio of pension trustee advisory clients, advising on their employer covenant and providing input into their integrated risk management framework monitoring;
  • Providing analysis and support to advise corporate sponsors of pension schemes in negotiations with trustees over employer covenant and mitigation / financial support options;
  • Supporting the growth of Deloitte's employer covenant and pensions integrated risk management propositions; and
  • Developing go-to-market propositions and external marketing initiatives to help enhance Deloitte's pensions and covenant advisory brand.

Your work, your choice
At Deloitte we believe the best impact is the value we add, not the hours we sit at our desk. We carefully consider agile ways of working, both formal and informal, that allow for the best impact for our people and our clients. Please speak to your recruiter about the working pattern that works best for you.

Location: Flexible with occasional travel

Work pattern: This is a permanent full-time opportunity.

Your professional experience

  • A successful applicant will possess many of the following key skills and attributes:
  • Qualified Chartered Accountant with proven accounting, audit or financial analysis experience.
  • Experience of working on accounting/financial projects e.g. experience in accounting advisory, restructuring or corporate finance.
  • Ability to carry out financial reviews of businesses (e.g. P&L, balance sheet strength and prospects analysis), analysis of financial data, review debt structures, and report on industry and market research.
  • Some knowledge of insolvency analysis e.g. Entity Priority Models and Estimated Outcome Statements (which will be produced by wider Deloitte teams or other side advisors), in order to advise clients of the implications, will be helpful, although on the job training will be provided.
  • Ability to quickly develop knowledge of defined benefit pensions regulatory and employer covenant assessment, drawing on the wider team pensions expertise which will be available to provide on the job learning, support and development.

Your service line: Tax Consulting

Personal independence
Regulation and controls are standard practice in our industry and Deloitte is no exception. These controls provide important legal protection for both you and the firm. We are subject to a number of audit regulations, one of which requires that certain colleagues abide by specific personal independence constraints. This can mean that you and your "Immediate Family Members" are not permitted to hold certain financial interests (shares, funds, bonds etc.) with audit clients of the firm. The recruitment team will provide further detail as you progress through the recruitment process.
