In a nutshell

The job holder will provide support and challenge, working cross-functionally with business to support in setting the annual corporate sales plan, the total company sales budget/ Q2F for Food (c. £20bn exc. Fuel), together with the reporting and analysis of performance against these targets to the Board. This role is an excellent opportunity to experience Commercial Finance, supporting the Finance Manager for Corporate Sales in all aspects of Corporate Sales Analysis and Control.

What you need to do
  • Support setting corporate sales budgets for the company, which involves liaison with the Business Unit Finance Managers and Supply Chain, modelling of various scenarios of sales growth and communicating targets to the Trading Teams and other key stakeholders across the business, including Retail, Supply Chain and Logistics
  • Producing timely and accurate information for the weekly Finance Update to the Pulse group
  • Reporting and analysis of sales performance to the Food Commercial Leadership Team, including in depth and ad-hoc analysis and responding to queries on a timely basis.
  • Preparation of base data and schedules supporting quarterly trading statements, ensuring robustness of all inputs. Working in collaboration with the Investor Relations team to provide detailed analysis of the key drivers to the quarterly LFL's performance.
  • External reporting of total company sales to external retail consortiums (IGD, BRC, ONS etc.)
  • Analysis and reporting of total company inflation / deflation on a weekly basis, analysing and understanding the drivers behind any movements, and providing guidance as to the underlying methodology and adjustments
  • Analysis and reporting of total company customer data (transactions, basket size etc.) on a weekly basis, analysing and understanding the drivers behind any movements
  • Ensuring integrity of corporate sales data, managing, and overseeing the maintenance of sales data
  • Reporting and analysis of all adjustments to sales (IFRS15) for Financial Reporting on a periodic basis plus more generally guidance to Financial Reporting and Planning around sales definitions
  • Monitor and reconcile the new space contribution to sales
  • Prepare periodic sales and inflation data (including commentary) for Management accounts
  • Support project work that assists analysis of corporate sales including process improvement and system transformation.
  • Work alongside Customer Insights to understand the trends in market share data (Kantar, Nielsen) and the differences in reported growth.
  • Monitor competitor performance and provide regular comparisons of performance against peers
  • Develop strong cross-functional working relationships with BU Trading teams, HR, and Group Finance.
  • Preparing Overheads analysis for the Director of Food Trading (payroll, travel, and other expenses).
  • Support the sharing of best practice across Finance.
  • Provide cover in the Central Trading Finance team for weekly and periodic reporting responsibilities.
What you need to know and show
  • Professionally Qualified Accountant (ACCA/ACA/CIMA), or studying towards qualification
  • Strong Excel and numerical skills, with an aptitude for turning data into analysis and insight and being able to clearly articulate this through your communication
  • Commercially aware with a clear focus on driving performance
  • To have a good track record of strong financial control, but also the ability to maintain such an environment
  • Effective communicator, influencer and challenger of all levels of stakeholders, including audiences of varying financial and commercial acumen
  • Self-motivated team player, able to work autonomously, prioritise with good problem-solving abilities
  • Must have a strong eye for detail and accuracy
  • Ability to prioritise and respond accurately under pressure
