The Client

Our client is a fast growing SME working in the renewable energy sector.

They are looking to recruit a Head of Finance motivated by the challenge and dynamism of an entrepreneurial environment and who has the drive and determination to be part of an exciting journey.

You will be someone who is motivated by the prospect of joining an aspirational business which has the objective of defeating climate change.

We will consider a broad range of qualified candidates, and the specific role can be flexed to a degree to accommodate the strengths of the right candidate. For example, this could include someone looking for a career move within a few years of qualifying, or alternatively someone considerably more senior looking to step away from a larger role in a big organisation so they can experience full financial responsibility across a rapidly growing business and/or a shift in their work-life balance.

Our client is an equal opportunities employer, so if you're just returning to work or need to work flexibly then we'd like to hear from you.

Head of Finance - The Role

This is an influential role critical to the success of the organisation. As such, you'll play a key part in leading and shaping the finance team, helping to improve financial processes and reporting and ultimately providing sound financial advice to the SLT. There is also the opportunity to be actively involved in direct project commercial leadership, interfacing with project sponsors and partners.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Oversight of the finances of the business including supervising production and analysis of monthly results and year end statutory accounts;
  • Ensuring sound financial and commercial management, including budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management;
  • Responsibility for VAT, tax, payroll, treasury, cash management etc;
  • Assist with R&D tax credit submissions;
  • Responsibility for share option schemes, share issues and filings at Companies House;
  • Ensuring appropriate cost-effective insurance is in place to meet legal requirements and the companies' needs;
  • Oversee the HR function, including responsibility for contracts of employment, recruitment, pension scheme arrangements and HR policies;
  • Evaluating potential new projects and carrying out due diligence on potential acquisitions;
  • Lead and manage the finance and administrative team, including developing and training staff;
  • Work collaboratively with team members to challenge assumptions and provide financial analysis and guidance on existing projects and activities;
  • Develop systems to improve reporting requirements;
  • Be the authorised official for HMRC purposes and ensure compliance with all investor, statutory and regulatory reporting requirements;
  • Establish a high level of credibility and manage strong working relationships with key stakeholders including the banks, investors, auditors, insurance brokers and HMRC.

The Successful Applicant

You will be a "hands-on" proactive Head of Finance who has gravitas to influence and to facilitate change.

Ideally you will have:
  • Achieved the level of qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA);
  • Exceptional analytical, presentation and Excel skills;
  • A diligent, problem solving and proactive attitude - prepared to be into the detail of the accounts as well as assisting with strategic planning;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external to the organisation;
  • Experience of reporting to the board and of contributing to strategy at a leadership level within an organisation;
  • Change management experience with a desire to drive continuous improvement;
  • The energy, ambition and enthusiasm to grow and add value to the organisation;
  • Sage 50 experience desirable;
  • Experience of M&A and joint venture accounting (desirable).

Please note that due to the volume of applicants we have for these types of roles, we will be unable to progress your application unless you include a cover letter addressing the requirements above and answering the following questions in your application.
  • Are you a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA)?
  • Have you acted as a number one in a finance department of a fast growing SME?
  • Do you have working knowledge of Sage 50?
  • Have you experience of M&A?
  • Have you produced robust financial models?
