Job Purpose:
The PDS EPM team (Process, Data & Systems for Enterprise Performance Management) contributes to the EPM digitalization journey, improving processes, data and systems used in delivering EPM solutions. The EPM Planning Process Expert plays an important role in delivering the PDS vision and goals, contributing to the drive towards top-quartile planning processes supported by latest technologies.
As an EPM Planning Process Expert, you will work closely with an international team of experts in Finance and IT to develop practical solutions for the current and future Planning processes. Your focus will be on our planning tool (Planning One) – a planning and portfolio optimisation system used across our Upstream (UP) and Integrated Gas, Renewables & Energy Solutions (IGRES) portfolio. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Finance or Planning expert with a strong understanding of petroleum financials and an interest in software and data to move into a business analysis role responsible for development of a key EPM application. As our team works at the heart of a number of new process improvement and digitalization initiatives you will be have the opportunity to take ownership of projects and work with a wide range of stakeholders to deliver tangible improvements to planning and forecasting solutions.
Dimensions:
The existing PAR processes are rapidly evolving with the aim to improve EPM in Shell, ultimately linking an efficient and transparent Planning process to equally efficient and transparent Appraisal and Reporting processes to allow early insights and interventions by senior management. This is a continuous journey that involves the identification and definition of improvement opportunities in current processes, alignment with the wide range of (often very senior) stakeholders and project management of delivery of these improvement opportunities.
Organisation:
This role reports to the EPM Product Owner Planning and is part of the global PDS EPM team and supports the PAR community whose work is used to steer Shell strategy, capital allocation and operating improvements.
The global PDS team is based in multiple locations in Europe and India, working closely with experts in many different parts of the UP/IGRES Businesses.

Principal Accountabilities:
- Managing a portfolio of business projects, change requests in the areas of business planning, reserves reporting, financial forecasting, portfolio optimization, and fiscal/commercial modelling
- Providing stakeholders with commercial and strategic analysis along with decision analysis
- Proposing innovative solutions to generate better and timelier insights that help drive decision making. Lead the development process for such solutions
- Working with software developers, architects and business counterparts to ensure the system is functioning in accordance with our standards and the business needs
- Managing project implementation of suite of software products and solutions
- Researching financial fiscal terms and developing models to support analysis.
- Delivering other automation initiatives in the Planning, Appraisal and Reporting space
- Mentoring more junior analysts and help to develop their expertise
- Developing and cultivating long-term relationships with business stakeholders
Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience
ESSENTIAL:
- Degree in Finance/Economics or other quantitative discipline, complimented by good understanding of main Petroleum Financial concepts. For non-finance majors, formal courses/qualifications like CIMA, ACCA, would be beneficial
- Comprehensive understanding of IFRS
- The sensitivity of working with most confidential, market-sensitive data
- Strong analytical skills are essential with an ability to think strategically. Candidates will have the ability to apply a comprehensive range of financial evaluation / business analysis techniques widely used within the industry. An understanding of Risks and Uncertainties associated with the business
- Ability to translate complex data into simple, powerful and easy to communicate insights
- Demonstrable experience in using industry financial software packages
- Ability to translate Business requirements into practical IT solutions
- Strong Excel modelling is a prerequisite
- Presentation skills with an ability to interact at senior management levels. You must be able to communicate complex ideas in an understandable and relatable manner.
- Ability to work independently with little or no direct supervision, being flexible, resilient and able to manage ambiguity
- Confidence and excellent interpersonal skills to be able to quickly build relationships and credibility
- Excellent communication skills in both written and oral English
PREFERRED:
- Some literacy in statistics / visualization tools
- Knowledge of a programming language. VBA/ VB.Net is preferred but other languages like Python would also be acceptable
- IT systems development or project management experience would be an advantage
- Understanding of Oil & Gas Industry
