FINANCE MANAGER (CONTRACT) - SCOTIA REINSURANCE LIMITED ("Scotia Re")
As a key member of the Finance team, the incumbent is accountable for contributing towards the optimization of Scotia Re's profit by analyzing and thus allowing for better control over insurance risk, operational risk, foreign exchange risk, liquidity risk and investment risk. The incumbent is also accountable for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting under direction from the CFO, through implementation of adequate controls, performance measurement and monitoring including, but not limited to, analysing/interpreting data, preparing/reviewing various financial reports, annual profit planning and monthly/quarterly forecasting and financial reporting.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
* Assume primary responsibility for the maintenance and reconciliation of the monthly General Ledger, Journal Entries and Trial Balance, including reporting to the shareholder and parent Bank.
* Contribute towards profit maximization through effective analysis, monitoring and reporting of insurance risk, operational risk, foreign exchange risk, liquidity risk and investment risk in each of the products.
* Contribute to the development of sound profit plans and forecast updates by reviewing and analysing each product that is reinsured by Scotia Re and participating in the forecasting of future results.
* Assist in the preparation of financial information, including input spreadsheets, management reports and variance analysis reports on an ongoing basis and the preparation of quarterly forecast updates for the products, countries and/or business lines assigned.
* Ensure the integrity of financial reporting by measuring and monitoring performance criteria and conducting in-depth financial evaluation of products as required/requested.
* Provide support to management as needed on audits, analyst reviews, regulatory requirements, etc.
* Provide support to insurance partners, advisors and Scotiabank second line of defence areas, by providing analysis on the various risks, costs, profitability, ROE, risk limits and the status of monthly statements/settlements, variances from profit plans/forecasts, etc.
* Assist in the research, analysis, business case preparation and implementation of new products and assist with their integration into the Scotia Re's reporting, profit planning, performance measurement and risk management policies, procedures and controls.
* Other accountabilities as assigned such as taking responsibility for or assisting with one-off requests from management, the Board, regulatory authorities, etc.
EDUCATION/DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* An undergraduate degree in Commerce/Finance with at least 3 years work experience in financial accounting, reporting and analysis is required.
* Advanced knowledge of accounting for insurance/reinsurance contracts would be an asset for this position.
* Achieved, or at an advanced level of pursuing, an accounting designation (e.g. CPA, CGA or ACCA).
* Sound understanding of accounting procedures and principles, specifically with respect to IFRS accounting/reporting, financial management concepts and performance measurement tools/criteria.
FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
* Good computer skills and familiarity with basic accounting and other business software applications.
* Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Skype, Teams, etc), Adobe Acrobat and Sage G/L applications would be an asset for this position.
* Good problem-solving skills in order to identify and resolve accounting issues/requirements and recommend solutions.
* Strong attention to detail and sound analytical skills for evaluating and reporting on changes in assets, liabilities, capital, revenues and expenses and, where necessary, proposing sound recommendations.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with the team to achieve tight deadlines.
