Global Head of ESG Governance and Disclosure-Global ESG Group

The Global Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Group at State Street provides enterprise leadership for State Street’s ESG program, effectively ensuring a well-coordinated and optimized approach to our ESG policies, products, initiatives, and thought leadership. The group looks to fully leverage ESG capabilities stemming from all areas at State Street, including providing direction to our product organizations to develop longer-term ESG products, determining strategies to position State Street as a first-mover in this space, and taking ownership of the governance and organizational framework supporting our ESG program.

The group is seeking a highly qualified individual to oversee the execution of the firm wide governance of ESG at State Street, including the following responsibilities, among others:

  • Establish climate-related business strategy and ensure cohesion / incorporation with corporate strategy more broadly, including product and service development, based on a climate-related assessment of the business environment, as appropriate
  • Set firmwide (including SSGA) standards for climate, includes setting policy guidelines, defining key terms, etc., to ensure internal consistency
  • Create oversight framework / oversee climate-related disclosure (examples include SOX-like structure around ESG report and coming SEC disclosures, etc.)
  • Work with established FLOD and SLOD to ensure internal alignment and continued progress on framework development from a resiliency (BCP, realty, HR, tech infrastructure, tech and ops risk, etc.) and financial risk perspective (credit, market, investment portfolio) including stress testing
  • Set climate data strategy, keeping in mind needs of all internal constituents, in alignment with firmwide strategy on data and data governance
  • Establish governance structure and ownership for the above items, including board communication, establishment of a climate risk governance body which owns strategic and policy decisions, embedding in the overall governance structure including branches and subsidiaries, clear roles and responsibilities, etc.
  • Design and maintain policies, processes and information flow in support of the execution of a effective posture across all material ESG issues
  • Provide co-ordination and expert support for international business units for their regulatory needs in combination with global functions
  • Assist in developing firmwide principles and guidance for our climate risk strategy and policy in the context of evolving regulatory expectations and industry standards
  • Develop and promulgate top-down policies and standards for climate and other ESG products and disclosures where appropriate, including defining key terms and ensuring internal alignment on strategic principles
  • Define key roles and responsibilities for climate risk management in close coordination with partners from the firm’s business units and control functions
  • Lead primary climate risk management governance forum, which maintains oversight for principles, policies, and standards, and escalates key decisions to senior management
  • Provide program and project management structure and controls
  • Ensure clear ownership for the inventory and mapping of regulatory guidance and requirements by jurisdiction in coordination with Legal and Compliance
  • Ensure a clear and coordinated controls framework for climate risk management and data-driven disclosures

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
  • 7+ years’ experience in the financial services industry, including in dealing with a large, complex organization and legal structure with multiple business lines
  • Significant knowledge of sustainability and other ESG matters that are material for large financial services businesses
  • Significant background in climate risk management, preferably in the financial services industry, including experience in understanding and identifying climate related risks and opportunities
  • Experience in collaborating with and building networks across a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external, including policymakers, industry bodies, and peers
  • Experience in establishing governance frameworks, policies, and controls
  • Ability to manage projects across multiple stakeholders, timelines, and key deliverables
  • Excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, unstructured environment
